The USA is no longer that reliable protecting power that Germany could depend on for decades. This leaves Germany facing a question that had long been suppressed: What role does this country want and need to take on in a world that is changing faster than the old Federal Republic was used to? The rivalry between the great powers is intensifying, artificial intelligence is transforming the economy and society, the global south is becoming more assertive, and Europe is under military pressure.

In his lecture, Joschka Fischer places this situation in a larger historical context. Germany remains the third strongest industrial nation in the world, yet it is a country whose relationship with power, military, and national identity is still shaped by the catastrophic history of the 20th century. Can a postnational Germany survive in an increasingly dangerous world? Is economic strength still enough when technological sovereignty, defense capability, and political determination must be renegotiated?

Germany must clarify what responsibility means today. The trust that its former wartime adversaries showed it after 1945 was the prerequisite for Germany's resurgence. Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer illustrates what it means today to continue to live up to that trust while simultaneously bravely facing the entirely new threats of the 21st century – militarily, technologically, and politically.

Joschka Fischer, born in 1948 in Gerabronn, served as Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1998 to 2005. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 2006. In 2006/07, he was a guest professor at Princeton University. He lives in Berlin and has published numerous books on German and international politics, Europe, and the new world order.
