Zwischen Jazz und Klassik–Saxophon trifft Harfe
VOID – Saxophone and Harp
VOID – NOTHING is a powerful term. A vacuum of meaning, an inner emptiness, is an existential experience. For Bastian Duncker and Anna Steinkogler, VOID is the sensitive yet powerful opening of a new musical space, where possibilities lie before they become reality. When meanings suddenly collapse, whether in love, friendship, or the human need for peace or justice, the gaze into this nothingness evokes dizziness and a sense of being lost, but also freedom. This VOID is creative, charged with tension and vibrating air. Everything that remains resonates here: the synthesis of the different personal influences of classical harpist Anna Steinkogler and jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist Bastian Duncker, who effortlessly moves between European, Arab, and African music traditions. What can grow in this VOID are compositions with strong storytelling, warm, earthy sound, and driving energy.
BASTIAN DUNCKER / ANNA STEINKOGLER
Bastian Duncker is a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. He lives in Berlin and is characterized by his multifaceted sound and genre-crossing work. In addition to contemporary jazz and improvisation, he is also interested in more traditional forms of jazz and various other music traditions, such as Iranian music. In addition to the saxophone, he also plays clarinet and ney.
Born in 1989 in Kiel, he grew up in Halle/Saale. After studying in the talent development program at the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig and subsequently at the Jazz Institute Berlin, Bastian Duncker quickly immersed himself in music traditions and genres from around the world, learning from and playing with international greats live and/or in the recording studio.
These include notable names such as Stella Chiweshe (singer from Zimbabwe), Gunter Hampel, Hayden Chisholm (saxophonist from New Zealand), John Hollenbeck (jazz drummer from the USA), Alèmayèhu Eshèté (singer from Ethiopia), Santrofi (pop/jazz band from Ghana), Jimi Tenor (Finnish composer and musician), Omniversal Earkestra (Berlin big band), Keyvan Chemirani (French percussionist of Iranian descent), Efren Lopez (Spanish guitarist and composer), Hana Kamkar (Iranian singer), Guy One (kologo virtuoso from Ghana), Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids, Magnetic Ghost Orchestra, Hailu Mergia (Ethiopian keyboardist and accordionist), The Polyversal Souls, Aly Keïta (Ivorian balafon player), Cheick Tidiane Seck (musician and composer from Mali), Dota Kehr, the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester, and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie (SR/SWR).
Concert tours have taken him far beyond European borders to Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Mexico, Sri Lanka, India, the USA, Canada, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.
Harpist Anna Steinkogler, born in Austria, is a prizewinner of various national and international competitions and completed her studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin with distinction. For her dance theater production with dancer Esther Steinkogler, she received a scholarship from the Prins-Bernard-Stiftung. For several consecutive years, she was a scholarship holder of the Dutch Stichting Musicians Worldwide.
Anna Steinkogler's musical curiosity and love for experimentation are reflected in her appearances as a sought-after chamber musician, including at the International Accordion Festival in Vienna, Ultraschall Berlin, the Wege durch das Land Festival, the Mozart Fest Würzburg, the Gmundner Festwochen, the Hohenloher Kultursommer, and countless projects in the independent scene, including readings with Jördis Triebel, Sophie Rois, and Helene Grass, as well as theater and radio play productions. She also appears as a composer and arranger. She is also the founder of the duo Oxymoron.
In addition, she enjoys active collaboration with institutions such as NDR Hannover, the Hamburg State Opera, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Volksbühne Berlin, the Taschenoper Lübeck, the Singakademie zu Berlin, the Ensemble Quillo, and the Zafraan Ensemble.
