Die eine Sinfonie ist gar keine – die andere dafür eine der berühmtesten überhaupt! Strawinskys Bläsersinfonie trägt nur diesen Namen, da darf man sich überraschen lassen. Dvořáks Sinfonie »Aus der Neuen Welt« dagegen: Musik, die jeden Zuhörenden packt und ganz und gar einfängt. Entstanden ist Dvořáks 9. Sinfonie in New York. Die neue Welt hat zwar ihre Spuren hinterlassen in dieser Musik, doch bleibt sie ureigene böhmische Romantik. Zu ihrer enormen Popularität beigetragen hat das prägnante Englischhorn-Solo des Adagios. Es ist von ebenso eingängigem wie schlichtem Charakter – und damit denkbar weit entfernt von dem, was Igor Strawinsky in seinen »Symphonies d’instruments à vent« den Holz- und Blechbläsern auf die Pulte gelegt hat. Da geht es rhythmisch scharf zu, melodisch schneidend – und alles wird mit der Präzision des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ohne Umschweife auf den Punkt gebracht. Thierry Escaich, der »Composer in Residence« des hr-Sinfonieorchesters, bringt es zugleich auf den Punkt, wenn er sein 2. Cellokonzert »Les chants de l’aube« einordnen soll: Er begreife es als eine Arie – und zwar in der Art, die sich an die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach anlehnt.

One symphony is not a symphony at all – but the other is one of the most famous of all! Stravinsky´s Symphony for Wind Instruments bears only this name, so you may be surprised. Dvořák´s symphony »From the New World«, on the other hand: Music that grips every listener and captures them completely. Dvořák´s Symphony No. 9 was composed in New York. Although the new world has left its mark on this music, it remains true Bohemian Romanticism. The concise cor anglais solo in the Adagio has contributed to its enormous popularity. It is as catchy as it is simple – and therefore a far cry from what Igor Stravinsky placed on the desks of the woodwind and brass players in his »Symphonies d´instruments à vent«. The music is rhythmically sharp, melodically incisive – and everything is brought to the point with the precision of the early 20th century. Thierry Escaich, the »Composer in Residence« of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, also gets to the heart of the matter when he is asked to categorize his Cello Concerto No. 2 »Les chants de l´aube«: He sees it as an aria – and in a way that is reminiscent of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
