Klänge vom Euphrat
Ostad Mikail Aslan, who comes from an Alevi family from Dersim, is one of the most popular Kurdish musicians. He has recently become known in Germany through radio appearances, including on SWR, WDR and BR.
Since his youth, Mikail has been exploring the music of his homeland near the source of the Euphrates. He studied European classical music in Germany, majoring in guitar and minoring in saxophone, while continuing to develop his techniques on the long-necked lute, the tembur. In his music, influences from his homeland blend with modern classical elements to create new sounds. Its authentic and mystical character is preserved. To this day, Mikail has remained true to his mother tongue and sings in Zazaki. He is part of the first generation of Kurdish, Zazaki artists working to prevent their culture from disappearing. When Turkish troops began forcibly evacuating Kurdish villages in 1980, Mikail’s family fled to Kayseri. During his studies in Malatya, Mikail began his musical career with protest songs, which led him to move to Germany in 1994, as he faced prosecution for “singing in a forbidden language.”
In February 2000, he founded the Mikail Aslan Ensemble in Mainz together with Michael Weil and Dieter Schmalzried. To this day, the ensemble focuses on Zazaki music, which naturally connects it to Alevi, Armenian, Persian and Turkish musical cultures. Folk, jazz and classical elements are woven into the musical traditions of peoples who continue to live in political hostility toward one another. The ensemble has enjoyed success in Europe, Asia and North America, performing at numerous festivals and concerts and appearing in radio and television recordings. Mikail Aslan thus continues to champion peaceful coexistence among different political and musical cultures.
