The Cultural Center Mainz (shortened KUZ) is a cultural institution founded in 1981 in Mainz.
The KUZ is situated in a listed brick building from the 19th century and is located in close proximity to the Mainz Winter Harbor and the Rhine. The repertoire of the KUZ includes music concerts, readings, theater performances, theme parties, and activities for children.
The KUZ offered, and still offers, not only individual events but also a fixed program of various activities. Every Friday and Saturday, themed parties took place at KUZ, such as a Perfect Beat Party, Ü30 Parties, or Dark Awakening. In terms of live concerts, KUZ can now boast a prominent guest list as a renowned venue. For example, bands like Die Ärzte, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Gilberto Gil, and Die Fantastischen Vier have already performed here.
From January 1, 2016, until December 13, 2018, KUZ was closed due to necessary extensive renovation measures and reopened on December 14, 2018.
The most significant innovation, in addition to continuous modern soundproofing, is the event spaces. In the basement, a new concert hall with a capacity of up to 1000 visitors, called the "Werkhalle," was created by combining two former foyer areas. The upper floor of the listed building has been completely redesigned. Here, a second, smaller hall called the "Lehrsaal," with 100 to 200 seats, has been set up, equipped with extensive technical facilities, and has since been used for theater performances, readings, as well as cabaret and comedy programs. The concert hall and the hall on the upper floor can be used simultaneously. Both stages were officially opened during a major cultural week on December 14, 2018. The "Werkhalle" was inaugurated by the rapper Chefket, along with the bands The Notwist and Blumfeld, while the first evening in the "Lehrsaal" featured a performance of the free theater group Junge Bühne Mainz with the play "Junge Bühne Mainz: Gesammelte Werke." The Junge Bühne Mainz has since found an additional performance venue in KUZ.
A special focus for live performances has been established at the KUZ-Sommer (KUZ Summer). The event, which has been taking place since 1991, is now considered a World Music Festival with a focus on Brazilian music. Musicians from the Brazilian, Caribbean, and Cuban music scenes, such as Gilberto Gil, Celia Cruz, or Eliades Ochoa, perform here.
For children, there is a dedicated children's theater series called "Kids im KUZ." In the event series "Kreative Kids im KUZ," special arts and crafts classes are offered to creatively support children.
