Gypsy Swing is in vogue and electrifies today just as it did in the 1930s when Django Reinhardt invented it in Paris. The Manouche – "manouche" means "human" in Romani and is a self-designation of the Sinti – combined the New Orleans swing of the twenties, which heated up the jazz clubs of Montmartre at night, with the traditional playing style of the Sinti and the Musette waltz of Parisian dance halls and cafés to create his new, unmistakable Jazz Manouche.
Today, the Collectif Django, led by Munich double bassist Julia Hornung, one of the defining voices of European Gypsy Jazz, brings Reinhardt's music to life. With "Soirée Manouche oder Paris bei Nacht," she continues the tradition with her band, not nostalgically or merely quoting, but creatively. In the spirit of the Manouche of the 1930s, while being highly sensitive to the vibes of the 2020s, the quartet interprets classics by Django Reinhardt so vibrantly as if they were just being invented, and combines them with original pieces.
On stage, Collectif Django is currently in full bloom. The ensemble's playing is energetic, chamber-music-clear, and communicative, with virtuosic improvisations. The soloist and the soloists deliver virtuosic improvisations. Giangiacomo Rosso, a rising star of the European Gypsy Jazz scene from Italy, contributes emotional guitar solos. Together with Julia Hornung on double bass, Belgian guitarist Jan van de Beeck provides the la pompe, the typical, pumping, driving, percussive, yet airy groove of Jazz Manouche: the foundation on which the soloists dance.
So too does clarinetist Jurek Zimmermann. With a warm tone, lyrical depth, and sensitive phrasing, he expressively translates the feeling of the Parisian swing clubs into the here and now. And along with Giangiacomo Rosso and Julia Hornung, he engages in dialogues that define the tension and character, fire and coolness of the Manouche sound of Collectif Django.
