Christmas Tour "Joy To The World"
London Brass was founded in 1986 by members of the legendary Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and is one of the most traditional brass ensembles in existence. Since its inception, the ensemble has not lost any of its virtuosity and charming freshness. In fact, this is what the 10 brass players set out to do in 1986: to uphold the virtuosity and richness of sound of classical brass chamber music and to present it in a fresh manner. The ensemble consists of musicians from the major London orchestras. Many of the founding members were able to gather plenty of experience during their time with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and thus London Brass made a name for itself with its concerts and outstanding CD recordings in the UK, across Europe, in the USA, and in Asia.
In the mid-1990s, London Brass ventured into new territory with a jazz trombone and trumpet, leading to collaborations with artists such as Jango Bates, Mark Anthony Turnage, Mike Gibbs, Richard Rodney Bennett, Moondog, John Surman, and Jack DeJohnette.
In recent years, the ensemble has toured many countries across Europe and performed in various significant venues in London: Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall, Barbican, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral, The Old Whitehall & Banqueting House, and Downing Street No. 10 - for worldwide television productions such as the BBC Proms, the Millennium Celebration Concert, the Queen's Jubilee, and the Pope's visit.
Since 2015, London Brass has been heard in the UK at Wigmore Hall, at the Newbury Spring Festival, and at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in the Kings Cross Cubitt Series. Foreign tours have taken the 10 Brits to Italy, Poland, Russia, Austria, and Germany. Summer festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Brandenburg Summer Concerts, and the Nordhessen Cultural Summer have been important performance venues in Germany since 2015, as have regular concerts in Munich, Frankfurt, Dortmund, Cologne, Essen, Dresden, Hamburg, and Berlin. In December 2017 and 2022, London Brass undertook an extensive tour with the Hanover Boys' Choir. In December 2025, these ensembles will go on tour again to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the boys' choir. Among the most spectacular performances are concerts at the Lincoln Center in New York, in a steel factory in Norway, or an open-air concert against the backdrop of the Dolomites.
The ensemble's repertoire ranges from 16th-century music, such as works by Giovanni Gabrieli, to songs by Freddie Mercury and titles from James Bond films. Individual musicians from London Brass regularly contribute to the recordings of the 007 soundtracks, effectively having the "license to play" for this music.
London Brass records for its own label, London Brass Recordings, and currently has "Christmas Carols" with the Hanover Boys' Choir (2014) released by Rondeau, while another Christmas album with brass arrangements titled "In dulci jubilo" was released in 2017 by Warner Classics. London Brass is the Ensemble in Residence at the Royal College of Music in London.
