In the midst of the turning point in time, Jonas is offered a role. He is to play the editor-in-chief of a prominent media outlet in a film satire titled ‘Heartless’. This journalist is a nasty piece of work, a ruthless character lacking morals and decency, who only has his own advantage in mind, a doer for whom any means is justified to gain attention for himself and his medium. Untruths, half-truths, omissions, and fake news underpin his success. After reading the script, Jonas, outraged, takes the stage and begins his new program ‘Keep Quiet’ with the exclamation: "I can’t play this miserable jerk! This has nothing to do with satire."
Jonas poses self-critical questions: What is allowed in satire? Really everything, or do some things go too far, and should one rather keep quiet? Practice self-censorship? What role is expected of him, not only in the film, in reality, in public, in private, in the spectrum of opinions in this democracy: Is there ultimately a true life in the false? What is right, what is wrong?
Jonas does not know if he is still mentally tuned in optimally. He sees himself as a deviant and suffers from it. "Do I still have the prescribed fears?" he wonders. Unfortunately, his fear of the apocalypse is still in the green zone. However, the thought of an energy policy blackout with multi-year dark stagnation strangely scares him. He is also increasingly haunted by a diffuse fear when a new, supposedly woke mentality of informants is on the rise in the ‘transforming society’, with which democracy is supposed to be saved. On the other hand, belief in the Easter Bunny and the resurrection seems more plausible to him than the realization of a European law on good border controls, skilled immigration, and bureaucratic reduction.
Yet despite the globally spreading crises, Jonas cannot work up any panic. Time and again, the cabaret artist opts against the new forms of freedom of opinion: the ‘silent opinion’, the ‘eloquent silence’, the ‘keep quiet’. In the end, the reasons for him to take on the role of the jerk are increasing.
