Iconic – this word did not yet exist in Beethoven's time, but he nevertheless succeeded in creating the iconic beginning par excellence for a symphony. Even those who want to steer well clear of classical music cannot ignore the striking four-note motif of Beethoven's »Fifth«.
And this symphony delivers on what its beginning promises. It lasts less than half an hour, but holding your breath for half an hour is hard enough – and you can hardly breathe, so energetic and powerful is this music. It was called the »Fate Symphony« because Beethoven is said to have said that fate was knocking at the door. Really? It doesn't matter. What he definitely did say has to do with the power of the three trombones, which are used here for the first time in a symphony. “The symphony is with 3 trombones and flautino – not 3 timpani, but it will make more noise than 6 timpani, and better noise at that.” You can't get better noise than that, he's absolutely right.
