Chor- und Orchesterkonzert zum 1. Advent - Chor- und Orchesterkonzert zum 1. Advent

Johann Sebastian Bach: Cantata 61 Now come, Savior of the Heathens
Johann Sebastian Bach: Cantata 36 Lift up your hearts joyfully
Arcangelo Corelli: Christmas Concerto
Bernd Alois Zimmermann: Sonata for Viola Solo

The Bach cantatas 61 and 36 approach the Advent season in very different ways: Now come, Savior of the Heathens, BWV 61 opens with a French overture. In a festive, majestic gesture, the music celebrates the arrival of the King. The character of the later composed cantata Lift up your hearts joyfully, BWV 36 is different. Bach originally composed it as a secular congratulatory cantata and later adapted it into a spiritual Advent cantata. This cantata thrives on the polarity of joyful praise and yearning petition for the Son of God on Earth. The Magnificat, the song of praise that Mary begins after learning that she will give birth to the Son of God, is a staple of the Advent season. Antonio Vivaldi expresses the revolutionary character with powerful, festive choral passages and reflective arias. A striking counterpoint to the baroque program is set by the Sonata for Viola Solo by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. While the Bach cantatas deal with the theme of arrival, the work from 1955 addresses departure. Shortly after her birth, Zimmermann's daughter Barbara died. The music quotes the chorale Blessed be You Jesus Christ, that You became human, and carries, in reference to Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, the dedication: to the song of an angel.

Domführung "Dom im Dunkeln"

During Advent, visitors have the opportunity to explore the cathedral in a completely new way. The “Dom im Dunkeln” tour offers the chance to experience the church interior in darkness and silence. Led by experienced cathedral guides, participants also gain fascinating insights into the spiritual and cultural significance of this impressive building.

The “Dom im Dunkeln” tours take place outside opening hours in small groups. They allow visitors to explore the church interior with all their senses: the echo of footsteps, the scent of incense, the play of light and shadow on the stone walls. Details that remain hidden during the day come into view in the beam of a flashlight. The tour explores topics including the cathedral’s construction history and the symbolism of light in Christianity. After making their way through the nave, transept and apse, visitors continue to the lower church. Holding a candle, participants can take in the space by its candlelight. This tour format is well suited to Advent, a season when reflection, slowing down and lighting a candle are celebrated in a special way.

Kloster Schiffenberg: Weihnachten, wie es früher war

Kloster Schiffenberg WEIHNACHTEN WIE ES FRÜHER WAR
The Schiffenberg, located six kilometers southeast of Gießen, has been a "magnet for the public" since the Neolithic Age, as archaeological finds attest. The basilica, consecrated nearly 900 years ago, majestically overlooks the wooded mountain and serves as a reminder of the monastic past of the site. The last renovation of this impressive sacred building earned the Hessian Monument Protection Award. After the Schiffenberg became part of the Grand Ducal-Hessian domain in 1809, the way was cleared for an inn that continues to welcome numerous guests today, now in a modern guise. Even back then, the Schiffenberg was one of the most popular destinations for Gießen residents.
Particularly atmospheric is the Schiffenberg during the pre-Christmas season. Lights, savory treats, and a small mulled wine Christmas market enchant visitors. A lively tour – including a visit to the basilica – provides plenty of interesting information about Christmas and pre-Christian customs. The birth of Christ and the days surrounding the winter solstice held great importance in the annual calendar during "pagan" times. How did the monks and nuns on the mountain celebrate the festival, and how did their successors, the choir knights of the Teutonic Order, celebrate the Holy Night? And what secrets does the "Schiffenberg Madonna" hold? It can be a little eerie when it comes to superstition and herb magic. There is also a reminder of family Christmas in 19th century Gießen, with loving customs and traditions that few people know today.

Cancellation & refund not possible.

The event is sold out.

& Christmas Oratorio (CANTATA I)

Anna Feith – Soprano
Samira Schür – Soprano

The shining centerpiece of this pre-Christmas concert evening is Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat in the D-major version. With its splendid choruses, virtuosic solo parts, and the festive brilliance of trumpets and drums, it ranks among Bach's most popular sacred compositions. Alongside it: The touching cantata "Now come, the Savior of the Heathens" (BWV 61) and the first cantata of the Christmas Oratorio with its rousing "Rejoice, exult!" – the epitome of Christmas joy.
A special highlight is the high-profile lineup of renowned Nuremberg soloists. Together with the Bachchor St. Lorenz and the young ensemble Nürnberg Baroque, they bring to life the festive sound world of Bach.

James MacMillan (*1959)
Gloria

Cappella Nuova
Sinfonisches Stiftshoforchester Sindelfingen (Theresia Hanke, concertmaster)
Sarah M. Newman, soprano
Marcel Hubner, tenor
District Kantor Daniel Tepper – conductor

In Advent jubilation, Mary sings a great hymn of praise about God’s goodness and justice in the Gospel of Luke. Antonio Vivaldi captures this hopeful and grateful gesture with baroque lightness, Italian virtuosity, and Venetian splendor. His famous Magnificat was composed around 1715 and expresses the vivid and characterful libretto in a sound-painting operatic manner.

This resounding jubilation is complemented by the Gloria text anchored in the Mass Ordinary, which recounts the Christmas story: "Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth," proclaim the angels to the astonished shepherds in the field. The British composer John Rutter makes the Christmas joy of the heavenly host palpably clear in his monumental Gloria, using brass instruments and percussion. With trumpeting fanfares, the Gloria speaks of reverence and heavenly glory.

A rather contemplative and suspicious underlying mood is struck by the setting of the Scottish avant-gardist James MacMillan. The harmonically refined work contrasts the exuberant text with tumultuous ostinati and surprising sound effects, while contemplative passages hint at fascinating influences from Gregorian chant, Byzantine orthodoxy, and Celtic folklore. Despite the joyful textual foundation and also majestic scoring with festive brass, timpani, and organ, a doubting atmosphere ultimately prevails, hesitantly questioning the heavenly promise of peace by the angels: Peace on earth - a utopia?

The last concert of the year will again be organized by the church music of Speyer. The choral educational work with children and young people within the church music of Speyer has received special attention in recent years. In 2009, a children's and youth choir was newly established. Three years later, the choir had grown in number to such an extent that an independent girls' choir at the Cathedral of Speyer and the Speyer Cathedral Boys' Choir could be founded.

From these two choirs, the KathedralJugendChor is formed, which focuses on the study of demanding a cappella choral music from all epochs and performs oratorio works with orchestra, also together with the cathedral choir.

The program includes the two cantatas composed to the chorale of Martin Luther by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland”, which were written 10 years apart (1714 and 1724) for the first Advent, and the Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, which particularly points to the Christmas festival.

Nativity Tale - Storyacting - Weihnachtsgeschichte für die ganze Familie (eng)

This play presents the biblical story of Jesus’ birth with a great deal of humor, in a way that is both traditional and contemporary: The angel’s announcement that Mary will give birth to a son whose name will be Jesus; Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging, as they cannot find a place to stay among the people during the busy Christmas season; Herod’s plot against the Holy Child; and the shepherds and the Three Wise Men who come to pay homage to the Child in the manger.

This play is a delight for young and old alike.
