Christmas Love Songs - Ein romantisches Weihnachtskonzert

„Christmas Love Songs - Ein romantisches Weihnachtskonzert“
The Tradition Tour
„I feel like a bull standing in front of a red cloth – motivated to the tips of my hair.“ With contemplation, but also passionately and temperamentally, Björn Casapietra wants to experience the most joyful time of the year together with his audience in his Christmas concerts, just like in his “Christmas Love Songs,” which are now celebrated in their 17th year in sold-out churches and theaters including Leipzig, Wismar, Stralsund, Potsdam, Münster, and Berlin.

Björn Casapietra loves the wonderful old German as well as the most beautiful Italian, French, and Celtic Christmas songs. All of these are transformed into an unforgettable experience through his own touching interpretive art. Thus, the repertoire of the exceptional tenor is extraordinarily diverse and demanding: Jubilant “Adeste Fideles,” reverent “Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen,” and passionately the famous French “Cantique de Noël.” With the moving folk tune “Still still still, weil’s Kindlein schlafen will” or one of the most popular lullabies, “Guten Abend, gut Nacht,” Björn Casapietra evokes memories of Christmas in childhood.
Also in the program – a medley of the most famous German Christmas songs: “Süßer die Glocken nie klingen,” “Oh du Fröhliche,” “Leise rieselt der Schnee,” and of course: “Oh Tannenbaum.” With “Bist du bei mir,” an aria in Bach’s tradition, Björn Casapietra wishes to sing into the hearts of the audience. Furthermore, well-known highlights such as Handel’s works “Tochter Zion” and “Ombra Mai fu” will echo.

“You know, we are living in hard times. Music has a mission now. Music has a purpose now.” And that for Casapietra means: to give hope and to heal. And what better way to heal than with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”?

The Christmas season is unthinkable without the well-known “Sind die Lichter angezündet,” perhaps one of the most beautiful Christmas songs from the former GDR, which Casapietra would also like to sing along with his audience. This song is still loved and appreciated as ever. The same can be claimed for the traditional German Advent song “Maria durch ein Dornwald ging.”

All these melodies will once again be sensitively and reliably accompanied by the young graduate of the University of the Arts, the charismatic pianist Peter Forster. “These songs of hope are exactly the right songs at the right time. They were written to give people strength and to offer encouragement, to refresh them. Churches were built for the very reason that people leave them refreshed and strengthened.” That is exactly what Björn Casapietra wants to achieve with his songs.
“When I stand in a beautiful church and sing “Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel with my classical tenor voice or the setting of one of the most moving poems of modern times, Bonhoeffer’s “Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen,” and then feel that the temperature in the church rises and all the people smile, then that is exactly what motivates me in my profession. On stage, I want to sing not just for the ears of the people but for the soul. I want to go deeper. The most beautiful moment is always when I start the ceremonial “Ave Maria” by Schubert and notice that people in the audience are taking out their handkerchiefs. Then I have touched the people, then I have done my job right.”

Balkan Christmas Night - Jovanovic Trio & Special Guest Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu

In Romania, songs for Christmas (Colinde) and New Year wish for health and prosperity, seek reconciliation with the souls of the deceased, or tell of a life closely connected with nature. Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu gives these songs a crystalline magic through her jazz-inspired interpretations and invites you to an acoustic stroll through a snow-covered land at the foot of the Carpathians.

Authentically and freely, she approaches the Christmas songs of her homeland together with the Jovanovic Trio, led by the well-known accordion virtuoso and a beloved guest in our club, Dejan Jovanovic. Don't miss this very special Christmas evening at ufaFabrik.

Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu hails from Humulești in northern Romania and moved to Berlin in the 1990s. Her repertoire includes tango music from Bucharest of the 1930s as well as songs of the Roma and from various Balkan cultures. No singer of the younger generation has approached the tangos à la Romanesque as authentically yet freely as she does.

Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu has become known to a larger audience across Europe through her sensitive interpretation of the repertoire of Romanian folk singer Maria Tănase. The accompanying album “Divine” and the previous CD “Bucharest Tango” have been released by the Berlin label Asphalt Tango Records.

Dejan Jovanović grew up in Obrenovac near Belgrade. He moved to Berlin in 1999 after winning numerous accordion competitions in Serbia to study classical accordion at the Hanns Eisler School of Music. His masterful accordion playing is appreciated and sought after throughout Europe; in 2021 and 2022, he was honored with scholarships from Musikfonds, GVL, and the German Music Council. However, Dejan is not only a gifted accordionist but also composes for accordion as well as for symphony orchestras. Some of his compositions were performed in Serbia at the New Year's Concert in January 2020 with the RTS Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, Dejan also toured Serbia with the "Virtuouzi" Symphony Orchestra.

The "Dejan Jovanovic Ensemble" with the string quintet of the Belgrade Philharmonic and the Romanian singer Oana Catalina Chitu is his latest project, into which he invests a lot of passion, just like in all his musical activities. The first concert of his ensemble took place at the ethnographic museum in Belgrade and was broadcast multiple times on the radio. For the New Year's Concert 2023 at the "Kolarac" concert hall in Belgrade, Dejan premiered some of his works with his ensemble and the “Kamerata” Symphony Orchestra.

The uniquely independent and expressive music of Vladimir Karparov is characterized by a perfect fusion of contemporary jazz and the rhythmic and melodic richness of Bulgaria's vibrant folk music. The versatilely inspired musician and talented composer, who easily transcends genre boundaries, has released very successful albums such as “Thracian Dance” (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). In 2020, he received an award from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for the global popularization of Bulgarian culture. In addition to working in his own formations such as the V. Karparov Quartet, the Balkan Spirit Ensemble, the Forkolor Saxophone Quartet, as well as the Duo Stawinski & Karparov and the Karparty Brass Band, he actively performs as a guest musician with various ensembles.
