AUF DER SUCHE NACH ITALIEN mit Martin Engelmann
In 2010, Martin Engelmann was commissioned by the renowned weekly magazine "DIE ZEIT" to photograph a report on South Tyrol. During his journey through the majestic Dolomites, memories of a magical childhood and unforgettable family vacations on the Italian Adriatic are awakened within him. In the following years, Martin Engelmann embarks on a quest to Italy to find the places of longing from his childhood and to discover new regions. It marks the beginning of a years-long photo and film project about Martin Engelmann's personal land of desire, Italy.
In the fairytale water city of Venice, he experiences the colorful carnival with all its vibrant nuances. Shortly after, he follows the historical paths of the Franciscan Way to walk through the gentle hills of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio, until he finally stands before the ancient walls of Rome. Year after year, Martin Engelmann returns to Italy, deeply touched by encounters with people who share their stories of longing, happiness, and hope with him.
Following the traces of antiquity, his travels lead to the vibrant metropolis of Naples and the sunken Pompeii. Here, Italy breathes history. Just a stone's throw from the shadow of Vesuvius, the most splendid coastal landscape in the world unfolds: the Amalfi Coast and the picturesque Capri, which are considered the epitome of Dolce Vita. Martin Engelmann's journey reaches its peak in the south, where Calabria, Apulia, Sicily, and Sardinia captivate with their unparalleled diversity. Here, the harmonious connection between man and nature has shaped the regions and tells the stories of those who yearn for a simple, fulfilled life.
“Auf der Suche nach Italien” paints an opulent picture of one of the most beautiful countries on our planet. It has become an ode to humanity, diversity, and the beauty that connects us all when the question is asked of what it truly means to search for and find Italy.
