Camilla George is a visionary saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and innovator. Her strong cultural roots and love for African fusion and Western music have shaped her own unique style, a key reason why she is a prominent figure in the new London jazz scene, alongside peers like Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is a hypnotic blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop, and jazz, with a politically charged subtext that strongly connects to her Nigerian identity, ancestry, and heritage, reflecting African history, culture, and slavery.
Her latest album, "Ibio Ibio," is a tribute to her tribe, the Ibibio people from the southeastern Nigerian coast. The album features an impressive lineup, including Daniel Casimir, Sarah Tandy, Winton Clifford, Renato Paris, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Rosie Turton, Shirley Tetteh, hip-hop drummer Daru Jones, Birmingham-born rapper Lady Sanity, and Sam Jones. "Ibio Ibio" received positive reviews; the magazine *Mojo* praised it in a four-star review: "George is the undisputed star, delivering layered solos with a touch of 50s hard bop." She gained further media attention, including a feature in *Jazzwise* magazine. Camilla was nominated for the Jazz FM Award as "Best Instrumentalist 2019" and won the "Best Jazz Act" award at the Urban Music Awards in 2023.
Additionally, Camilla performed a headline concert at the Barbican as part of the London Jazz Festival, where she, together with Shabaka Hutchings, presented a specially commissioned program in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the "Take Five" initiative by Serious. She was also selected for the concert for International Jazz Day 2027, where she will perform alongside numerous international jazz legends. Currently, Camilla is working on her fourth studio album, which will be recorded next summer.
