The Sound of Music - Das Abenteuer-Musical der Familie von Trapp
For the 20th anniversary, the Staufer Festival brings one of the greatest musical classics of all time to the stage: The Sound of Music.
This world-famous work by Rodgers & Hammerstein has been captivating millions for decades – on Broadway stages, in international theaters, and in the legendary Hollywood film featuring Julie Andrews, which won 5 Oscars and ranks among the most popular films in the world.
Now, a new, specially developed festival production is being created in Göppingen by our artistic director Alexander Warmbrunn, combining timeless music, an emotional story, and the artistic signature of the Staufer Festival.
A musical full of heart, hope, and musical brilliance
At its center is the novice Maria, whose warmth, curiosity, and love for music change the lives of the seven children of the von Trapp family – and that of their strict father, Captain von Trapp – forever.
Set against the backdrop of the political upheavals of the 1930s, the musical tells a tale of courage, home, loss, and the power of unity.
The immortal melodies such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” or “My Favorite Things / Meine Lieblingsdinge” have long achieved cult status and are among the most sung musical hits worldwide. In Göppingen, they resonate in an emotional, German-language interpretation.
A world hit – reimagined for Göppingen
The Staufer Festival creates a modern, visually striking, and touching new version that combines the charm of the original template with the unique festival atmosphere.
The production follows the international success story of the piece – but interpreted with the regional identity, authenticity, and artistic signature that the Staufer Festival has been known for over two decades.
This production is not a copy of familiar versions, but an original festival production: musically opulent, scenically modern, and newly developed in all crafts.
Over 250 contributors are involved in this anniversary production: the large festival choir, the children’s choir, the dance ensemble, professionals from music and theater, as well as many volunteers from the region.
