FELIZ NAVIDAD! - Andalusische Weihnacht & Flamenco
With passionate flamenco guitars, virtuoso cello, multi-part singing, and expressive dance, the musicians and dancers embark on a journey through the south of Spain.
The melodic, sometimes energetic, joyful, satirical, sometimes gentle, delicately melancholic Christmas songs (Villancicos) of the Spaniards tell of the biblical stories surrounding the birth of Christ, of the fruitless search for shelter, of the three wise kings (Los Reyes Magos), and the caring shepherds at the crib in the stable. In addition, they also speak of faith-filled sailors ("Once upon a time, there was a sailor ...") and extravagant coal merchants ("El Carbonero"). Near the Andalusian town of Huelva, one encounters pilgrims making their way to the Holy Virgin of the Morning Dew, the "Virgen del Rocío," and a Biblical Sevillana tells stories from the Old Testament of unfaithfulness and betrayal, of King David, the beautiful Judith, of Samson and Delilah.
Ricardo Volkert leads the audience into an Andalusian-Christmas, poetic imagery world and narrates exciting, interesting stories about the land and its people, saints and sinners, about Spain yesterday and today.
