Swing trifft Uniform
Swing trifft Uniform – over 50 years of show, sound, and groove made in Germany
For more than five decades, the Bundeswehr Big Band has represented musical excellence, captivating performances, and the unmistakable sound of a modern big band – all in uniform. Under the leadership of bandleader Colonel Tobias Terhardt, it is one of the most significant and exciting big bands of our time.
Within the Bundeswehr’s military music service, this ensemble holds a special role: instead of marches or classical orchestral literature, the Bundeswehr Big Band focuses on a variety of contemporary entertainment music styles – presented in a multimedia stage show that delights both audiences and organizers alike.
What makes the musicians from North Rhine-Westphalia so unique is their dual mission: they are sonorous ambassadors of Germany and at the same time, the musical business card of the Bundeswehr – professional, passionate, and likeable.
Musical uniformity does not exist here. Each of the 24 instrumentalists is handpicked, trained at the most prestigious schools for modern music, and a master of their craft. When the Bundeswehr Big Band takes the stage, an energetic sound emerges, blending all elements of music into an unforgettable experience. Each concert becomes a show full of surprises, emotions, and zest for playing – an invitation to leave everyday life behind for a few hours.
Already at its founding in 1971 by the then Minister of Defense and later Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, the ensemble received a clear mandate: to create a modern sound for a modern army. The audience should be able to experience the hits of their time, the classics of past decades, and the ever-timeless world of swing. This concept continues to thrill today – whether with state guests, presidents, or even the pope: wherever the Bundeswehr Big Band performs, feet tap and fingers snap in rhythm.
Another hallmark: the musicians have played without fees since their inception. The ticket revenues – now well over 20 million euros – have benefited people in need since the first concert.
Internationally, the swing formation is also in demand: New York, Oslo, Nairobi, Riyadh, Madrid, Cape Town, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or Rio de Janeiro – hardly a continent where the Bundeswehr Big Band has not yet performed. Whether at diplomatic receptions, grand society balls, or large sporting events like the Olympic Games – the band always knows how to musically captivate the audience, hosts, and guests.
Behind every concert lies precise teamwork: an experienced planning team coordinates tours at home and abroad, while a ten-member technical crew transports over a hundred tons of equipment. A ten by six meter LED wall, state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology, cameras, and microphones ensure a show that meets the highest standards in sound and visual appeal.
After over five decades, the Bundeswehr Big Band has made a name for itself in the international show business – a guarantee of quality, professionalism, and musical passion.
The result: an ensemble that is not only regarded as the "most well-known and favorite unit of the Bundeswehr" but also as a cultural flagship of the Federal Republic of Germany – modern, likeable, and always exhilarating.
