Dann passiert das Leben
Rated FSK from 6 years
Hans, who is approaching retirement as a school director, moves through life with his wife Rita more like a guest. Their adult son has long since moved out, and the long-standing marriage of the two follows a well-rehearsed routine, with Rita setting the pace. And as far as she is concerned, there is no reason to change anything. In general: she doesn't like changes. The new tiles in the bathroom are just the beginning of something that greatly concerns Rita.
Suddenly, old wounds become visible again. Suddenly, both of them realize how little they know about their son's life. Suddenly, there is this emptiness in their life together. Suddenly, it is no longer clear whether they are two individuals or a couple. But then, life happens...
Director Neele Leana Vollmar narrates in DANN PASSIERT DAS LEBEN with a fine sense for subtleties and poetic lightness about the big questions that often hide in the quiet moments of everyday life. With warm humor, a lot of heart, and an honest look at what remains when life leaves its usual paths. DANN PASSIERT DAS LEBEN is a tribute to a forgotten love and to the courage to rediscover each other even after many years together.
This sensitive story is carried by two exceptional actors: Anke Engelke (“Perfectly Missed”, MOTHER, “German House”) and Ulrich Tukur (AND WHO TAKES THE DOG?, FROM NOWHERE, JOHN RABE) bring Rita and Hans an impressive authenticity that touches and resonates. With nuanced performances, they capture the breaks, longings, and quiet hopes of a couple that must meet anew.
DANN PASSIERT DAS LEBEN is a production by Lieblingsfilm (BECKENRAND SHERIFF, TRAUTMANN), in co-production with ZDF/Arte, Dor Film, and Perathon Film, supported by funds from FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Filmförderungsanstalt, DFFF, Bavarian Banks Fund, and the Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI+).
