Madeline Juno - Live
Live
Of course, we all wish we could stroll through the world history casually at any time and sidestep the potholes of everyday life with a mild smile – but that rarely works out. Even less so when digital grins are coming at us from everywhere, pretending to convey a carefreeness that one cannot find within oneself. How refreshing, therefore, when someone not only openly admits their fallibility but also writes sharp-witted, sensitive, self-ironic, danceable, and ruthlessly honest songs that embody life as it truly is. How powerful it is to have a sense of reflection and equality even in the spotlight. MADELINE JUNO makes pop with edges and corners, with twists and revolving doors, with brains and courage – and continues where others stop.
Her story begins in her parents' band basement, which she declares her children's room at age 11. At 13, she uploads songs to YouTube, which she does not tell anyone at home about, but which catch the attention of the producers of Tokio Hotel. The collaboration begins before her 15th birthday, and right after graduating from high school, the first album THE UNKNOWN is released. An album that is so world-changing for the blood-young girl that the title adorns her forearm: With hits like "Error", the title song of "Fack ju Göhte", the debut becomes a sensational success in 2014. The album quickly secures five million streams and paves the way for SALVATION, which comes out in 2016 and is her last English-language release for the time being. Maddie's creativity knows no breaks, and songwriting and collaborations with German-speaking colleagues do the rest: "I was curious about how my voice sounds in German and whether the songs work in my mother tongue." She is 20.
Having arrived in Berlin from Offenburg, the WALDBRAND EP in 2017 with German lyrics and the LP successor DNA actually causes a major fire: Tracks like "Schatten ohne Licht" or "Ohne Kleider" become viral hits, YouTube awards her the Silver Play Button in 2019 for 100,000 subscribers, and WAS BLEIBT is released – her fourth album and the third to crack the top 40 of the charts. Meanwhile, Maddie collaborates with artists from Kayef to Esther Graf to 1986zig, paints and sells her own artwork, hosts and produces a podcast, and takes the reins for everything that happens around her music. Successfully: Her last two albums BESSER KANN ICH ES NICHT ERKLÄREN and NUR ZU BESUCH entered the charts at #6 and, alongside sold-out tours, festival and TV appearances at Deichbrand, zdf@Bauhaus, or TV Noir, she wrote music for the ZDF feature film "Geheime Schatten."
In 2025, MADELINE JUNO will release her seventh album ANOMALIE PT. 1 without any hashtag hype. These are smart songs, well-crafted productions, relentless perseverance, and stunning sincerity that have brought her here, and this year they will beam onto all stages and, with the upcoming season of Sing meinen Song – das Tauschkonzert, also to screens. After the South African summit with, among others, Bosse, Johannes Oerding, Mieze, and the Fantastischen Vier, what insiders already know is coming to every living room: Maddie has long belonged to the first league.
MADELINE JUNO seems delicate in a world of algorithms, external appearances, and AI – but her mere handling of words and truth casts larger-than-life shadows, behind which all feelings have their place.
