Carolyn Wonderland - Support: Rio Grande Mud
Carolyn Wonderland has earned her reputation as an extremely independent artist with her dynamic guitar playing, impressive songwriting, and pure Texas vocals. She plays original bluesy soul music mixed with a hefty dose of Tex-Mex and riff-driven rock 'n' roll. While writing her own story, she has performed with icons such as Buddy Guy, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and John Mayall.
Carolyn Wonderland was born in 1972 in Houston, Texas, and grew up in a house full of musical instruments. She started making music at the age of six, and by the time she was eight, she realized she was a musician. After scratching her mother's vintage Martin guitar by mimicking Pete Townsend’s famous windmill, she was banned from using picks. For this reason, she developed her aggressive and distinctive fingerpicking style on the guitar. At 17, she formed her first band and began to prove herself in the tough competition of the Houston club scene.
In 2018, legendary musician and bandleader John Mayall chose Carolyn Wonderland as the lead guitarist in his band The Blues Breakers. She was the first woman to ever hold this position, with previous members consisting of an all-star list of legendary guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Coco Montoya, Walter Trout, and Buddy Wittington. She toured the world with Mayall and played on his last two albums.
With her own band, she has performed in the USA and in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Panama, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, the Canary Islands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Japan.
In 2021, she won the Austin Music Award for Best Blues Artist and Best Guitarist and was inducted into the Austin Music Hall Of Fame; she was also nominated for three Blues Music Awards.
On her new album "Truth Is," Carolyn Wonderland reflects the world in unvarnished honesty with lively, catchy songs. Regarding the album's theme, she says, "There is always hope, and we are always there for each other, but at some point, you have to sing about the elephant in the room." With "Truth Is," Wonderland asserts her claim to be one of today’s most influential voices in roots music, delivering the honest truth of the blues to all who want to hear it. "She is something special," Bob Dylan once told Ray Benson. "She should be well-known everywhere."
