Richard, who once built dams and aqueducts, lives a reclusive life in a residential complex after the death of his wife. Because he disapproves of her political views, he has cut off contact with his daughter Helen, a lawyer who is married to a Black writer. It is particularly difficult for him to ask her for help, as he can hardly see anymore and can no longer live alone. Two incompatible life concepts collide. Neither of them has been able or willing to build a bridge to the other thus far.
Both are blind, blind to the perspective of the other, blind to the injuries they have inflicted on each other, until a cautious rapprochement begins through which they gradually recognize each other's motives, fears, and desires.
“The well-made conversation piece will soon be seen on numerous stages,” predicts Detlev Baur on November 29, 2024, in Die Deutsche Bühne about the complex, emotionally touching father-daughter conflict. “BLIND,” the new play by Dutch playwright Lot Vekemans, performed in over 35 countries and translated into 22 languages, strikes a chord with its universal and current themes. The author poses the question of whether it is possible to love someone whose beliefs you reject.
Press Reviews
Equal opportunities, distributive justice, climate change, ecological exploitation, racism – and above all, the generational conflict: The contemporary issues checklist in Lot Vekemans' father-daughter play leaves hardly any gaps. (…) In her production for the Altes Schauspielhaus, Karin Eppler focuses on psychologically motivated character development and can rely on the nuanced, sensitive performance of her acting duo.
