The trombone is a neglected instrument: often underestimated or reduced to its effects. Not so with the Trombone Unit Hannover. The ensemble is a convincing combination of individual excellence and outstanding ensemble play. Each of the eight musicians is a soloist at the highest level, often awarded and at home in renowned orchestras. Together they explore the trombone in all its expressive range: from the finest transparency to orchestral power, from dance-like lightness to serious sonorous speech. This ensemble does not simply play the trombone. It shows what it can be. It is no coincidence that the Trombone Unit Hannover was the first brass ensemble to ever win the German Music Competition (2011) - a unique achievement in its 36-year history.

With its creative and surprising programs that combine classical and contemporary music, original works, and arrangements in a sophisticated manner, the ensemble captivates the international concert scene. This concert is no exception: The program tells in a personal and varied way about the ensemble's travels to different parts of the world and through music history. Scandinavian expansiveness stands alongside Spanish lightness, Polish or Japanese folklore, and dancing Belgian Renaissance. We hear Mozart, Sibelius, Albéniz, but also Piazzolla or film music. But above all, we experience the trombone on this journey like we have surely never heard it before.

The organ is the queen of instruments, but until now it has rarely been experienced in harmony due to a lack of instruments. Christian Schmitt, a world-renowned concert organist, travels with an organ specially built for him. The musical direction of the concert is in the hands of guest conductor Sébastien Rouland, who has been the GMD at the Saarländisches Staatstheater since 2018.
The "Adagio for Strings" is world-famous, having been used in many films and regularly played at funerals. However, hardly anyone knows the "Toccata festiva," composed in 1960 for organ, strings, and trumpet by Samuel Barber, which is characterized by lyrical expressiveness and stormy sound gestures, ending with a highly virtuosic pedal cadence of the organist. Francis Poulenc's organ concerto for strings and timpani is a classic of the repertoire that combines baroque forms with late romantic expressiveness and modern sound language. The "Simple Symphony," premiered in 1934 by Benjamin Britten, combines a neobaroque texture with dance elements and features such vivid titles as "Playful Pizzicato" and "Sentimental Saraband." Dvořák's string quintet op. 97 is strongly inspired by impressions of the "New World" and contains elements of American musical traditions. The arrangement for string orchestra was created by WKO cellist Georg Oyen and will be performed in this program for the first time.

Samuel Barber's single-movement Toccata Festiva unites a large symphony orchestra and a concert organ. The piece requires lyrical expressivity, stormy sound gestures, and whisper-like, transparent tones.

The String Quartet op. 11 is considered Barber's most popular work. He arranged its second movement, the Adagio, for string orchestra - for tonal color reasons. Barber wanted to achieve, so to speak, oil instead of pastel, especially for the brilliant climax of the work.

Dvorák composed his third string quintet during his vacation in a Czech emigrant settlement in the USA. The sociable atmosphere with long-missed countrymen, the vastness of the landscapes, and the inspirations from encounters with Native Americans inspired the composer to his virtuosic work.

The organ was the instrument closest to Georg Friedrich Händel throughout his life. In the organ concertos, the playing pleasure of the talented soloist Händel uniquely combines with his compositional craft.

Christian Schmitt is among the most sought-after organists internationally. Highlights of his extensive concert activities include performances with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle and at the Salzburg Festival. For over 30 years, the concert series "Konzerte an der Silbermann-Orgel" has attracted numerous music lovers to the pilgrimage church in Ettenheimmünster with renowned instrumental soloists and organists. St. Landelin is among the most beautiful Baroque churches on the Upper Rhine and houses valuable art treasures, including one of the rare organs by Johann Andreas Silbermann from the year 1769. In a unique way, perfected, radiant organ sound and Baroque architecture combine to create an extraordinary atmosphere. On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, at 5:00 PM, the renowned Stuttgart trumpet ensemble will once again be joined by the award-winning Stuttgart Cathedral organist Prof. Johannes Mayr. Trumpets and organ jubilantly resonate and majestically swell. Their harmony transports the audience to other spheres. The five exceptional musicians will present brilliant trumpet concertos, meditative works for Corno da caccia, and virtuosic organ music including compositions by J. J. Mouret, G.F. Handel, J. S. From the Arabic Riq to the South African Kalimba to ethereal cymbals – the Duo Taschenspiel takes the audience on a musical journey around the globe. At times it sounds surprisingly modern, at times swinging, and sometimes almost like an electronic beat – just completely played live. Techno on the bassoon? Yes, it works. And sounds remarkably good.

Bassoonist Stefan Balciunas demonstrates how versatile his instrument can be – virtuosic, playful, and full of character. At the same time, Felix Anton Lehnert brings a remarkable collection of percussion instruments to life: struck, shaken, plucked, and sometimes played simultaneously with hands and feet. Together, the two musicians create a sound world that lies somewhere between classical music, world music, and surprising groove moments.

Festliches Konzert - für Trompete und Orgel

Trumpet and organ – this is repeatedly a sound combination of special appeal. The brilliant sound of the brass instrument blends wonderfully with the tones of the so versatile "Queen of Instruments". Hardly any instrument fits better with the sound of an organ than the trumpet, where baroque sound grandeur unfolds in an almost unparalleled way.

Lukas Beno is the first principal trumpet of the Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and the Australian World Orchestra. In 2005, he founded the Gewandhaus Brass Quintet together with solo brass players from the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which has since been successfully concerting across Europe. As a welcome guest on the solo trumpet, he has played with the Berlin Philharmonic, the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden, and numerous other renowned orchestras. Solo performances have led the trumpeter to the Düsseldorf Symphony, the Nürnberg Symphony, the Jena Philharmonic, and to esteemed chamber orchestras like the Camerata Bern. Furthermore, he offers masterclasses both nationally and internationally, including in Venezuela, the USA, Cyprus, Brazil, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, and China, and he has also held a long-term teaching position at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig. Lukas Beno studied with Prof. Günther Beetz in Mannheim, where he completed his diploma and master's examination.

Georg Schäffner, born in 1953 in Gößweinstein, studied at the Academy for Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg (organ: Karl Norbert Schmid) from 1969 to 1973. He then pursued private studies with Wolfgang Wünsch (Bamberg), Prof. Franz Lehrndorfer (Munich), and Prof. Norbert Düchtel (Regensburg). From 1981 to 1983, he studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich (organ with Prof. Gerhard Weinberger), graduating with the state artistic diploma. He has been the organist at the Basilica of Gößweinstein since 1967 and was regional cantor in the Archdiocese of Bamberg from 1973 to 2018. In 1988, Schäffner was awarded the Culture Prize of the Forchheim District, in 2011 the Culture Prize of the “Oberfrankenstiftung,” and in 2018 the “Goldene Ehrenring” of the municipality of Gößweinstein.

The award-winning trumpeter Simon Höfele, celebrated for his "charismatic brilliance and warmth" (Luzerner Nachrichten), is among the most prominent soloists in Europe. He regularly appears with leading orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, or the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and is also a committed chamber musician and promoter of contemporary music.

Alongside him plays Sebastian Küchler-Blessing, a Bach Prize winner of the Leipzig Bach Competition and a teacher at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. As the former youngest cathedral organist in Germany, he combines the highest technical mastery with stylistic versatility; performances have taken him to the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the KKL Lucerne.

Together, they present an exciting program that bridges tradition and modernity – from Bach's famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) and the choral arrangement "Deck thyself, O dear soul" (BWV 654) to romantic and virtuosic works by Max Bruch to a freely improvised fantasy. To conclude, jazz-swinging sounds by George Gershwin will resonate.

An evening that combines baroque depth, romantic fullness of sound, and modern energy into an intense musical experience – a celebration of timbres for trumpet and organ.
