They appear in “Die Enthusiasten,” probably the most turbulent and daring novel in a long time, which recklessly explores the boundaries of what storytelling can be and what is man-made art. Also involved: a mysterious Thai woman, an endlessly lovable, book-obsessed, and willful mother who disappears without a trace, and a father who answers only to unprecedented questions.
Markus Orths was born in 1969 in Viersen, studied philosophy, Romance languages, and English studies, and lives in Karlsruhe. So far, sixteen novels and story collections have been published, including Lehrerzimmer, Das Zimmermädchen, Alpha & Omega, Max, Picknick im Dunkeln, and Mary & Claire. “Die Enthusiasten” will be published in February 2026 by Galiani Verlag.
Some of his books have been translated into a total of nineteen languages and have received various awards, most recently with the scholarship from the German Literature Fund. Orths has given poetics lectures in Paderborn and Bamberg.
The play Femme de Chambre won the Prix Théâtre 13. “Die Entfernung der Amygdala” premiered in Baden-Baden. The maid Lynn hit theaters in 2015. WDR, NDR, SWR, and HR produced eight radio plays.
Inspired by his own children, he has also recently written children’s books. In 2026, the fifth volume of the Crazy Family series will be released: Crazy Family - Die Hackebarts rocken die Schule!
