Pentaphone Project - Das Saxophone-Ensemble
The Pentaphone Project is an ensemble for saxophone fans and anyone who wants to become one. Here, five young jazz saxophonists showcase the range that can be covered with their instrument: from laid-back Latin to danceable swing and moving ballads, there's everything. And they do it all without a rhythm section!

With the Pentaphone Project, the five put the saxophone with its many facets and its large dynamic spectrum in the spotlight. Through the use of baritone, tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, they present the entire range of the instrument family. They bring along original arrangements created specifically by the ensemble members for this project, which they deliver with precision. Jazz standards, originals, and pop songs serve as templates – but above all, original compositions by the performers themselves. These are interspersed with moments of collective improvisation, giving the concerts a spontaneity and uniqueness that the audience can feel.
The sound of the ensemble is colored by the individual sounds of the musicians, who typically perform with their own band projects. In the Pentaphone Project, the five harmonize both musically and personally. Their long-standing friendship is evident in the lively concert atmosphere that is both visible and audible.
Founder and soprano saxophonist Carolin Heuser studied, among other things, the master’s programs in jazz composition/arrangement with Prof. Marko Lackner and jazz saxophone with Prof. Hubert Winter and Leonard Huhn at HfM Würzburg. There she learned the necessary skills to write a large part of the pieces and arrangements for the ensemble.
Theresa Finkbeiner (alto saxophone) discovered her passion for playing in various ensembles at a young age – shaped by many big bands like the Landesjugendjazzorchester Baden-Württemberg. While studying with Prof. Hubert Winter in Würzburg and Prof. Miguel Martínez in the Netherlands, she fell in love with the approaches to creating different timbres on the saxophone.
Magdalena Busler (tenor saxophone) is active as a bandleader and composer of her own jazz quartet and toured last year with a musical production throughout Germany and Austria. Her studies have taken her from Würzburg to Belgium at the Luca School of Arts.
Estelle Dupont was accepted as a tenor saxophonist into the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra at the age of 19. After a young study with Prof. Stefan Karl Schmid in Mannheim, she has been studying at HfM Nürnberg with Prof. Klaus Graf since 2024.
Her colleague in both the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Pentaphone Project is Linda Scharnagl. The young baritone saxophonist hails from Eckental, previously studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, and is currently studying at the renowned Jazz-Campus in Basel.
