Baroque sound brilliance from Handel's time with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and soprano Roberta Mameli
With Georg Friedrich Handel's moving music, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, one of the most renowned ensembles for baroque music, returns as a guest at the Kassel Music Days after many years. Together with soprano Roberta Mameli, who is in high demand worldwide as an outstanding interpreter of the Italian baroque repertoire, the ensemble fills the Schauspielhaus with a sparkling mixture of arias and instrumental works: from Handel's Suite The Alchemist and the virtuosic aria "Con l’ali di costanza" from the opera Ariodante to two Concertos by Alessandro Scarlatti and Pietro Antonio Locatelli, ending with Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Orfeo cantata and a work that has long been attributed to Handel: Giovanni Battista Ferrandini's Il pianto di Maria.
Pergolesi's Orfeo cantata makes the mythical figure of the singer shine between hope and despair, while Ferrandini's large-scale lament of Mary goes far beyond a small sacred devotion: In its operatic dramaturgy, a spiritual journey unfolds between quiet, almost frozen moments and dramatically agitated outbreaks. In the alternation of recitatives and arias, the works span a range from inner consolation through passionate determination to existential lament – baroque music dramas in a concentrated concert format. It is precisely in this condensation that it becomes evident how music can make inner turmoil audible and ask us which experiences, losses, or hopes move us the most deeply. Thus, an evening is created that makes the baroque sound world palpable in a special intensity.
