Don Ross & Julie Malia (AKA Jule Malischke) feat. Martin Weinert and Isa Kimmel
Musical Friends - Instrumentals & Songs
Don Ross lives in Nova Scotia (Canada) and has been touring the world’s stages for over 30 years as a "reviver" of fingerstyle guitar. As a soloist or team player, as a musician, arranger, or composer – his music tells stories that resonate deeply, while also being technically brilliant. His unwavering groove combines modern (poly-)rhythmic elements, and percussive techniques merge with delicate melodies to create unique, moving soundscapes.
Julie Malia (AKA Jule Malischke) is the heart and soul of the Giengen Guitar Festival – technically and organizationally of course, but primarily and foremost artistically-musically. In recent years, she has succeeded in bringing representatives of various streams and styles of acoustic guitar to Giengen. As one of the most versatile artists in the current guitar scene, she masters different facets of the acoustic guitar effortlessly, bridging the gap between classical and jazz, between instrumental and vocal music, between earthy grooves and heavenly soundscapes. In a duo with Don Ross, two distinctive individuals come together to create a sound that takes us listeners to previously unknown sonic dimensions.
Joining them are Isa Kimmel and Martin Weinert, two long-time companions of Julie. Isa Kimmel, originally trained in "classical" violin, found her way into the creativity and individuality of jazz through her encounter with jazz violinist Hajo Hoffmann and unfolds a unique sound with her five-string violin, marked by impressive personality, surprising timbres, and emotional depth. Whether in virtuoso improvised solos or in sensitive accompaniment, Isa's playing adds brilliant highlights to the ensemble sound.
Double bassist Martin Weinert has been a reliable figure in the jazz scene for decades. After a longer hiatus from the stage, he captivates with his formation "Martin Weinert's Rainbow Experience," but also as a duo partner of Julie. His playing is characterized by a pulsating groove that lays the foundation for rhythmic and harmonic inspiration.
As the opener of the opening concert, singer/songwriter Ernie Rissmann takes the Giengen concert stage with his unique self-built fingerstyle guitar, coaxing guitar tones from his instrument: relaxed, light, and to the point, catchy yet full of sudden twists. Beautiful and exciting at the same time, all this resonates deeply, has depth, and sounds – like hardly any other songwriter.
Ernie Rissmann not only plays himself but also showcases his custom-built guitars at the festival!
