Glitter, jazz, and abyss: “Der große Gatsby” is a dramatic reading with music and musical outbursts in the series: “Theaterschiff an Land, zu Gast in der Französischen Kirche Potsdam” on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald's death. In “Der große Gatsby,” the "Jazz Age" of the 1920s meets profound emotions and the question of whether the American Dream truly holds up – or merely dazzles.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as the literary voice of the “Jazz Age,” the “Roaring Twenties,” a time of great upheaval in the USA after the First World War, characterized by economic growth, social freedoms, criminality, and the explosive popularity of jazz. In his novels, the New York of the interwar years shines brightly – captivated by rhythms like those of Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong, while simultaneously being skeptical of the glamour that can deceive, reflected in the contradictions of the characters. Startlingly current references to our time can be found within them.
The main character is the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, who has loved the beautiful Daisy for years, who married another man during his military service. “Der große Gatsby” is a tragic love story, a panorama of society, and a requiem of excess and decadence all in one. On stage, this becomes a reading “with musical outbursts”: Isabell Gerschke and Christian Näthe shape the text and sing along, accompanied by the Brandenburg saxophonist Sebastian Hillmann. Thus, literature turns into a concert evening – between party light and echo.
Isabell Gerschke and Christian Näthe can be experienced as a duo for the second time; their successful evening “Skizze eines Sommers” will continue to be seen on the Theaterschiff.

Isabell Gerschke studied pop singing at the Musicians Institute Hollywood and completed a stage dance training at Danceworks in Berlin. She is known to TV audiences, among others, as a commissioner from “Polizeruf 110,” as well as “Heiter bis tödlich: Akte Ex,” and as a doctor from the TV series “In aller Freundschaft.” Christian Näthe had his first film roles as a teenager, followed by numerous other film and television roles, such as “Jochen” in “Deckname Luna,” the biology teacher in “Fack ju Göthe,” or “Captain Heym” in “Ballon.” He also appeared in various television series, including “Notruf Hafenkante,” “Ein starkes Team,” “Soko Potsdam,” as well as the AppleTV series “Hijack.” He is a co-founder, singer, and guitarist of the band “Hasenscheisse.” Sebastian Hillmann is a well-known Brandenburg saxophonist, among others from “Meiers Clan.”
