CHAI-Festival 2026: "Im Dunkel ein Glanz, unverlöschlich"

A musical-literary excursion explores the diverse traces of Jewish writers. From Moses Mendelssohn to Heinrich Heine, Joseph Roth, and Franz Kafka, the journey leads to the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler, Mascha Kaléko, Nelly Sachs, and Paul Celan. The great wealth of this poetry, which is hardly conceivable without it in German literature, becomes visible. Often wrested from existence, these texts stand for "Chai," for the power of the living, calling for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.

Hans-Jürgen Herschel gives voice to these voices; alongside him is Lömsch Lehmann, a saxophonist with a sense for the unheard, who improvises into the texts, commenting, contradicting, and embracing them. Thus, an intense interplay of literature and music emerges – a radiant dialogue about what remains: In the dark, a glow, unquenchable.

Summerwinds Festival: Flautando Köln, Holger Schäfer: Licht und Finsternis

Brilliant interplay at the highest level, wit, temperament, and charm: Flautando Köln has been one of the most internationally renowned recorder quartets for years. With a sense of style and imagination, the musicians adapt works from the Middle Ages to the present and combine them with original compositions into captivating programs. They use more than 40 recorders of various sizes and types, and sometimes Ursula Thelen sings along with the music. And the storyteller, multi-instrumentalist, and award-winning minstrel Holger Schäfer joins in when music and words revolve around the eternal struggle between good and evil, devil and angel, around "Light and Darkness – Hellfire and Heavenly Splendor."

In Christianity and Judaism as well as in Islam, angels mediate between God and humanity. As heavenly beings created by God, they are not divine themselves but ángeloi (Greek), "messengers," and instruments of God, radiant beings of light that play the most beautiful of all music on harp and recorder in the angel concert. They announce God's messages, protect people from evil, comfort and heal them. Their opponent is a fallen angel, who, out of pride – he wanted to be God – draws people down into darkness, into evil, into depression and sin, hell, their eternal fire. He is called Satan or Lucifer, the devil.

Flautando Köln begins "Light and Darkness" with the chapter "Diabolus in musica." The devil in music is the tritone, the dissonant interval of six half steps that disturbs divine order by expressing pain, lament, and sin, as in Machaut and Bach. The biblical story of Job, who is stripped of everything by Satan to test his faith, resounds with di Lasso. Bach's Toccata and "Vuur" by the Dutch composer Pieter Campo evoke the "Falling into Hellfire" fervently at the concert's end. The chapters in between offer "Angel Music" with angels bringing good news and comforting. And the fairy tale by Holger Schäfer based on the American-Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran poetically clarifies what holds the world together: the polarity of light and darkness.

Festival kick-off at the Kulturforum: The Composer's Summer starts as a romantic total work of art! Laura Demjan (vocals), Sirka Schwartz-Uppendieck (piano), Michael Herrschel (text & recitation), and M. Ulrike Irrgang (photography) conjure a kaleidoscope of nocturnal moods in music, poetry, and images. Sparkling piano nocturnes and longing songs of the romantic pioneers Maria Szymanowska, Emilie Mayer, Fanny Mendelssohn (“Nachtwanderer”) and Clara Schumann (“Der Mond kommt still gegangen”) invite to dream. The melodies of Alma Mahler (“Laue Sommernacht”) and Lili Boulanger (“Clairières dans le ciel”) unleash a romantic temperament.
The Nocturnes concert also presents sounding surprises from the treasure chest of the four-leaf clover city: youthful works by Frieda Fronmüller, whose birthday is celebrated for the 125th time this year, and verses by the theater revolutionary born in Fürth, Max Bernstein, wonderfully set to music by his contemporary Luise Adolpha Le Beau.
Special brilliance comes from international festival contributions from composers Julia Schwartz (Switzerland/USA), Sevi Salam (Azerbaijan), and Silvia Sommer (Austria). The program is crowned by three world premieres. Three nocturnes were specially created for this opening evening of the Composer's Summer: by Dorothea Hofmann (“Abend glühgold”), Tina Ternes (“Über Nacht”), and Yulim Kim (“Dongjitdal Ginagin Bamul” based on a Korean love poem).

Tovesco Trio

With a fresh sound and a fine sense for musical nuances, the emerging Tovesco Trio connects three masterpieces from different epochs. Joseph Haydn's Trio in E-flat major Hob.XV:29 exudes wit and elegance of the Viennese Classic. The piano trio by Rebecca Clarke, which was composed in 1921, takes you into the colorful sound world of the early modern period. The Briton is considered the most important composer of her country in the interwar period. In her piece, she lets passion and melancholy meet. In the spirit of romantic inwardness, Robert Schumann's Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, op. 63, is characterized by emotional tension and lyrical depth. He dedicated it to his sister Clara, whose fine sense for expression and form has significantly influenced the understanding of the trio.

The young Tovesco Trio was founded in 2021 and has won today’s performance at the Hohenlohe Cultural Summer as a promotion prize of the International Chamber Music Master Course of Jeunesses musicales in Weikersheim. The trio has received multiple awards and has already performed in the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonie, and Carnegie Hall New York.

Welcome to the Festival "The Last Rose of Summer" Berlin 2026!
The Last Rose of Summer Festival Berlin 2026 connects different sound worlds and musical perspectives in five concerts. The focus is on works that make the familiar audible again and highlight voices that have long been overlooked.
A special highlight is the return of harpist Siobhán Armstrong, who will open the festival with an intimate and atmospheric program. The program is complemented by a special saxophone concert with Christoph Enzel, who expands the sonic horizon of the festival.
A central concern is the music of female composers: Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann, and Rebecca Clarke each showcase their unique paths between romantic expressiveness and a new, clearer language of form.
Particularly in the third concert, this connection becomes audible. Rebecca Clarke's Duo Concertante for violin, viola, and piano (written around 1940) moves between retrospection and new beginnings: Echoes of Johannes Brahms—especially the energetic finale of his Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25—stand alongside an increasingly reduced, modern sound language.
In the closing concert, this work will be performed itself: Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25, along with music by Ernő Dohnányi. The large forms unfolded there pick up on the ideas hinted at previously and carry them further. Thus, over the five evenings, a musical connection emerges that brings tradition and present into a lively dialogue.
