„Quirky Nightclub Chronicles“ Verrückte Nachtclubgeschichten
“Performance full of energetic sound, full of homogenously developed sound culture, which they play into the audience with seemingly limitless ease.”
Anyone who has been to Munich's Königsplatz may have discovered it: Arcisstraße, which became the namesake of the Arcis Saxophone Quartet 15 years ago. Having long outgrown the "world city with heart," the quartet counts among the most active classical ensembles worldwide. Whether at the highest pass in Ecuador, in the middle of the Saudi Arabian desert, on a rock in the American Atlantic, or in a sold-out Philharmonie in Munich and Berlin... the four saxophonists feel at home with their music everywhere.
And the adventurous spirit continues. On a trailer as an improvised stage through the province, playing and pedaling on the conference bike through the big city or with theatrical makeup on their faces: creative, artistic, and always curious, they approach their music-making and not only invent new concert formats but even entirely new art forms, as recently with their arcis_collectiv, which connects chamber music and contemporary dance in a joint performative act. A sophisticated dramaturgy, sound and light design, as well as captivating moderation are all part of the concert experience for the four multi-talents, just as are the energetic interpretations, the finely tuned original arrangements, and the commissioned compositions from around the world that they have tailor-made.
To remain authentic, their artistic vision flows into all areas of their work: After their two debut CDs “Arcis Saxophon Quartett plays Enjott Schneider” (2013) at Ambiente Audio and “Rasch” 2017 at Genuin, the four quickly founded their own record label, arcis records, and established their own production company, arcis visuals, in-house, which takes care of visual and media content.
They acquired their chamber music skills from the best of the best. They studied with the Artemis Quartet at the UdK in Berlin and at the training ground of the European Chamber Music Academy (Hatto Beyerle, Alban Berg Quartett; Prof. Johannes Meissl, among others), as well as at HMT Munich with Prof. Koryun Asatryan and Prof. Friedemann Berger.
And the international success came quickly. The press rejoiced, “A quartet of world format,” and the competition successes and awards poured in. They earned First Prizes at the musical competition of the Kulturkreis Gasteig e.V. (Munich; along with the audience prize), at the International Music Competition Concorso Argento (Italy), at the First Classical Music International Internet Festival “Chance Music” (Russia). They received a third prize at the 13th International Chieri Music Competition (Italy). In 2014, they followed with a second prize at the chamber music competition of the Alice Samter Foundation (Berlin) and in 2015 a first prize at the 4th International Contest – Festival of Chamber Ensemble Performance named after T.A. Gaidamovich in Magnitogorsk (Russia). In 2016, they won a first prize at the 1st Rising Stars Grand Prix 2016 – International Music Competition Berlin.
Additionally, the ensemble was awarded the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize 2016 and received a scholarship from the Theodor Rogler Foundation, a music scholarship from the state capital of Munich, as well as scholarships from the Erika and Georg Dietrich Foundation, the German Orchestra Foundation, the Music Fund e.V., and the German Music Council.
To inspire the younger generation, the musicians, and the audience of tomorrow, the quartet has taken on the theme of Education: through ensemble workshops, masterclasses, and with several dozen school visits per year, they reach out directly to children and adolescents and skillfully excite them about music and making music.
For the Arcis Saxophon Quartet, music is like an endless playground, and they are as diverse as no other group. Only one thing remains the same: their unmistakable sound.
