Glühbirnenglanz und rauchende Schlote – Nürnbergs 1920er
Franken wedding tradition, flourishing hop trade, the blooming bicycle and toy industry - the noble villas of wealthy businessmen stand in contrast to the cramped living conditions of workers in the southern city. But there are also leisure activities for everyone, cinemas, the folk festival, in the old town a tavern next to another, variety shows and dance halls. Electrification turns night into day. The young generation in a phase of upheaval, emancipation and women's suffrage, cars and trams, life is speeding up.
What was it like back then, in this time between the world wars, what were the everyday struggles, was there an improvement in living conditions for the broader population? Did a young woman now have free access to education, could she work and actually decide for herself about marriage – or not? Through individual fates, we dive into an exciting story, in which young people fight for their personal freedom and self-realization. Yet the generation of parents holds different values, the political circumstances are explosive, and the disparity between the wealthy manufacturers and the large working class in Nuremberg is immense. Will there be a happy ending for the loving young couple, amidst political struggle, desire for emancipation, and social inequality? Alongside this gripping drama, Dr. Alexander Schmidt will provide the facts to impart much knowledge about Nuremberg's urban history during the Weimar Republic. Exemplifying the large brewery Zeltner Bräu, the hop dealer Joh. Barth & Söhne, we visit the printing house of the Franconian daily newspaper in Breiten Gasse, the Noris Lichtspiele in Karolinenstr., the Schocken, MAN, and the folk festival in Fürther Str. For an extremely entertaining evening, the ensemble of the Theater Rote Bühne guarantees acting, comedy, singing, and its burlesque diva Sweet Chili.
