Carmina Burana – Carl Orff - Nationaloper und Ballett der Ukraine, Odessa
„La Fortuna“ is the powerful opening of the world-famous work „Carmina Burana“. The sounds immediately captivate the audience. They are also often used off the opera stage, for example as a film soundtrack. On Friday, April 4, 2025, at 7 PM, there is a rare opportunity to experience the piece in its entirety live at the Sauerland-Theater Arnsberg – in a performance with the National Opera and Ballet Ukraine, Odessa.
„Carmina Burana“, the scenic cantata by the German composer Carl Orff, is a compelling, poetic work about the unpredictability of fate, the joy and transience of earthly existence, sensual enjoyment, drinking bouts, and the changing of the seasons. The work is based on a Benedictine manuscript from the 13th century with songs of wandering journeymen, partly in Latin and partly in Middle High German. Orff himself described the „Carmina Burana“ as secular songs for soloists and choir accompanied by instruments and images. In Arnsberg, the masterful work is performed in the spirit of Orff by 130 participants in a modern staging as an audiovisual total artwork. In it, all art disciplines merge into a touching experience.
The direction, choreography, and design of „Carmina Burana“ are in the hands of the Dutch choreographer Gerard Mosterd. The successful former dancer is particularly committed to making world-famous classical works accessible to an audience in more rural areas. The renowned ensemble National Opera and Ballet Ukraine, Odessa, consisting of top artists from music, ballet, and singing, attests to the outstanding quality. Alona Vorokh, Bohdan Panchenko, and Oleksandr Prokopenko will sing with orchestral accompaniment.
Remarkable about this large-scale production is that it is performed by leading artists (vocal, ballet, orchestra) from an area heavily affected by the war.
