The Holocaust survivor, born in 1941, shares the fates behind the headlines and makes it clear that grief and despair know no sides. Her great, humanitarian essay (Droemer Verlag / Translated from Dutch by Bärbel Jänicke) is a vehement call for dialogue, reflection, and action. Together with Jan Konst and Iris Berben, she presents her plea for communication and peace.

Both were born in Tehran, both emigrated with their families to Germany: Behzad Karim Khani (*1977), a shooting star of German literature, and Mohammad Sarhangi (*1989), a historian at the Center for Antisemitism Research at TU Berlin. In his new novel "Als wir Schwäne waren" (Hanser Berlin), Behzad Karim Khani tells the story of a family's arrival in a new country, the anger of a son, and the hopes of the parents. In "Jahre der Angst, Momente der Hoffnung" (S. Fischer), Mohammad Sarhangi shows how exile, foreignness, and discrimination shape feelings – often across generations. The communal experience of family: How does the shared flight and the joint arrival bond children and parents together?

Radka Roma has died – variety artist, singer, dancer – and outsider. A small newspaper clipping brings the news to the area between Bremen and Hamburg: to Alfred, also an outsider, affected by a late-diagnosed polio, whose guardian angel was Radka. And to the police officer Werner, who at the time failed to solve a murder. The new novel by Johano Strasser tells of these and other people, their secrets and transgressions. It is a tenderly poetic and highly political novel that explores the great currents of the world within the microcosm of a small village community (Library of the Province).

“Die Haut” by Curzio Malaparte, born in 1898 as Kurt Erich Suckert – son of a German and an Italian – in Tuscany, died in 1957, is one of “the most horrific yet simultaneously magnificent books of the 20th century” (Kurier). A scandalous novel and at the same time an epochal anti-war book, which can now be rediscovered in the translation by Frank Heibert (Rowohlt / with a foreword by Florian Illies). In 1943, the liaison officer Malaparte (!) embarks on an odyssey through the devastated land, where the inhabitants live in misery and chaos, and Mount Vesuvius erupts. Naples is hell on earth. It is the image of a modern Sodom and Gomorrah – as relevant in our peace-deficient present as it was upon its release in 1949.

Theresa lives in Vienna. In the indoor pool, she practices holding her breath, seeking dizziness on a carousel. But what she really wants is to go to space, to be closer to Betelgeuse, the giant star in the constellation Orion. "Betelgeuse" by Barbara Zeman is a linguistic artwork stretched between space and underwater world (dtv).

Ina is fifteen. Things aren't going so well at home and neither at school. And in love? Everything is a mess. Or is it? The author and musician Alexandra Helmig makes the life of a teenager audible in "Beat before the One." A book like a soundtrack – compelling and rapid (Mixtvision).

And Noëlle Kröger tells in her spectacular graphic novel "Meute" (Reprodukt) about a young werewolf researcher who, at the end of the 19th century, fights against prejudices and dares to break out into an uncertain future – together with a pack of werewolves. The Winter-Mix is served!

150 JAHRE RAINER MARIA RILKE - Ein Abend mit Sandra Richter & Manfred Koch

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. His art is said to be “making things out of fear,” he writes to his former lover Lou Andreas-Salomé in July 1903. In “Rilke. Poet of Fear” (C.H.Beck), the Stuttgart literary scholar Manfred Koch portrays Rilke as a highly sensitive echolocation and the most gender-fluid poet of the emerging modernity. Meanwhile, Sandra Richter, a literary scholar and director of the German Literature Archive Marbach, shows in “Rainer Maria Rilke or The Open Life” (Suhrkamp) that Rilke was in no way the world-estranged hermit he liked to stylize himself as, but rather more robust, cheerful, and life-capable than generally assumed. Who was the creator of the “Book of Hours,” the “Duino Elegies,” or “Malte Laurids Brigge” really? Sandra Richter and Manfred Koch present their new Rilke biographies in conversation, supplemented by selected text passages.
