Between Frame and Reality: The View from the Window – Workshop at 6:00 PM in the City Museum, Burgstr. 11 Price: 16 € incl. materials
Become a student of Max Beckmann yourself! In this workshop, we will be inspired by Beckmann's assignment – the motif of the view from the window – and create our own “view from the window” using the technique of linocut. Colorful, black-and-white, or single-colored, your creativity knows no bounds!
The painter and graphic artist Max Beckmann (1884 – 1950) is one of the most significant German artists of the first half of the 20th century. However, the circle of his students is almost unknown. Although Beckmann taught a master class at the Städel School in Frankfurt am Main for several years – from 1925 to 1933 – there is no “Beckmann School.” In 1933, Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching position by the National Socialists – the circle of his students disbanded before a significantly Beckmann-influenced “school” could develop from the class.
The exhibition sheds light on the artistic development of Theo Garve, Georg Heck, Walter Hergenhahn, Inge Hergenhahn-Dinand, Leo Maillet, Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, and Karl Tratt. The exhibition examines to what extent their artistic development was restricted and their recognition hindered by the circumstances of the time.
