Benny Goodman visits the 21st century

The traditional Christmas concert of Stefan Bauer, a Ruhr area native living in Brooklyn, is this time under a very special motto: “Was Benny a good man?” is a question that these musicians will answer with an enthusiastic and contemporary interpretation of pieces that helped Benny Goodman achieve the status of an icon of the swing era. And: “Yes, he was a Goodman,” who gave meaning to his name, played fantastically, and led bands made up of both black and white musicians long before the words “civil rights” and “integration” found their place in the everyday vocabulary of his home country.[nbsp]

In the inspired hands of Stefan Bauer, Mike Roelofs, and Yonga Sun, “Let’s Dance,” “Undecided,” “Sing, sing, sing,” and other hits that drew people onto the dance floor in the new world and post-war Europe in the 30s and 40s shine anew, both in the old and - with the means of the 21st century - in new splendor.[nbsp]

The role of the clarinet master in this ensemble is taken by the seasoned soprano saxophonist Chris Bacas from Brooklyn. What qualifies him, besides his captivating playing, is the fact that he has toured with the big bands of Artie Shaw and Buddy Rich and the "Ghost Bands" (leaders deceased, but still with members of the original bands) of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey all over the USA, thus having a direct connection to some of the absolute greats of the swing era, especially with the drumming virtuoso Buddy Rich, with whose big band Chris traveled the world. Furthermore, Chris is a truly talented writer and storyteller who has captured many experiences on tour with a mix of irony, empathy, and the subtlest observational skills. He will read some passages relevant to lovers of this music that allow for a slightly different glimpse behind the scenes of the "glorious life of musicians."

Django Reinhardt invented the world of Gypsy Swing – Joscho Stephan brings it to the present. With impressive virtuosity and unmistakable stage presence, the guitarist combines the tradition of classical swing with influences from jazz, Latin, pop, and rock, earning a steadily growing fan base worldwide: eight performances at the legendary Birdland in New York, collaborations with Bireli Lagrène, Daniel Hope, and Al Di Meola, tours through the USA and Australia.

Alongside him: Sven Jungbeck on guitar and Volker Kamp on double bass – together they form the Joscho Stephan Trio, which condenses joy of playing, precision, and creative interaction into an exhilarating concert experience.

In the final days of the GDR, he starts a music career in Berlin with his band DIE ZÖLLNER – around the same time, Manuel Schmid is born in Altenburg. The German attempt at a social alternative is already a long way off when Schmid discovers the soundtrack of the East for himself. The discovery becomes an obsession and makes him the frontman and creative head of STERN COMBO MEISSEN.
For many years, friends in mutual admiration, a fixed ensemble has been formed from occasional jam sessions. Together with André Gensicke on keyboards and Marek Arnold on saxophone and clarinet, they interpret the musical heritage of the East in a wonderful, minimalist, yet emphatic way. Not a nostalgia show, but instead, with the highest emotionality and respect. In sum: A matter of the heart.
The concert evening, whose repertoire is always in motion, currently fills halls, souls, and hearts – what could be more beautiful?

The idea for an ensemble emerged in no time from a chance encounter between the Bremen guitarist Jörg Seidel and the accordionist Roberto Gervasi from Palermo in November 2024, and by March 2025 they were already in the studio recording a CD.

Gervasi brought along clarinetist Nicola Giammarinaro, and Seidel convinced bassist Jean-Philippe Wadle to join the band… the "German-Italian Swing Quartet" was born.

“We play classic swing, but we believe that every music we interpret should carry the swing within it,” says Seidel. And so, alongside titles from the Benny Goodman era, French jazz waltzes, Brazilian choro, and bossa nova resonate in this new and fresh sound defined by the chamber musical interaction of guitar, clarinet, and accordion.

Roberto Gervasi is the new star in the jazz sky and swings his way – inspired by the great Frank Marocco – into the elite of jazz accordionists. Nicola Giammarinaro defines a very own category through his playing and proves to be a world-class soloist with a wonderful tone and captivating phrasing. Jörg Seidel, who has earned an exceptional reputation with his own lineups, holds the ensemble together with Jean-Philippe Wadle and provides an accented rhythm guitar that adds the Django – and Freddie Green touch. During their first tour in October 2025, the ensemble received standing ovations every night.

Monsieur Pompadour - Swing Jazz

In the summer of 2014, the French bohemian Monsieur Pompadour found his way to Berlin. The illustrious circle of his lavish parties included a singing Belgian, a Hungarian violinist, an extremely silent bassist, and an aristocratic guitar virtuoso. They formed a band and have since been impressing with songs about life and love, sung in four-part harmony and interpreted in the style of their idols Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. To mark their debut, Monsieur Pompadour bestowed upon them the honor of his melodious name and then vanished as a stowaway on a luxury liner.
Monsieur Pompadour consists of Ernesto (vocals, guitar), Ferenc Hegedütok (violin, vocals, singing saw, synthesizer), Florian von Frieling (guitar, mandolin, vocals), and Antti Virtaranta (double bass, vocals). The internationally composed band from Berlin has been captivating stages, festivals, and streets across the country for 11 years with their very special mix of cheerful chanson swing, ambitious wildness, and a touch of melancholy.
In the program "Django’s Songs," Monsieur Pompadour connects the swing of Django Reinhardt with the great voices of European music history. Patrons include Paolo Conte, Hildegard Knef, M.A. Numminen, Françoise Hardy, Gianna Nannini, Sven Regener, and many more. In the best variety tradition, nothing is excluded, and the band delights with multi-voiced singing, virtuosic jazz, rare instruments, and dubious stories. German-Italian Swing Quartet - From Benny to Django

Everything must swing! Following this motto, the German-Italian Swing Quartet connects classics from the Benny Goodman era with French jazz waltzes, Brazilian choro, and bossa nova. Guitar, clarinet, and accordion blend into an elegant, chamber-like sound full of joy in playing, virtuosity, and exquisite improvisation.

The quartet emerged from a chance meeting between guitarist Jörg Seidel and accordionist Roberto Gervasi, who hails from Palermo. Together with clarinetist Nicola Giammarinaro and bassist Jean-Philippe Wadle, they formed an ensemble that captivated audiences night after night with standing ovations during their first tour.

At the center is Roberto Gervasi, who was awarded the title of "Ambassador of the Accordion in the World" in 2023 in Castelfidardo – the world capital of the accordion – and is one of the most renowned jazz accordionists in Europe. He collaborates with Nicola Giammarinaro, a clarinetist of exceptional expressiveness and stylistic variety. Along with Jörg Seidel's rhythmic guitar work and Jean-Philippe Wadle's precise bass playing, they create a fresh, transparent swing sound that merges classic swing tradition with European and South American influences.

Live at Neidecks No. 4, this is already the third joint CD by Yuliya Lonskaya and Lulo Reinhardt.
Once again, the duo surprises with new ideas and new songs. Lulo Reinhardt composed ten new songs specifically for this duo, all of which were also arranged by Yuliya Lonskaya. For example, "Freedom and Peace"... here too, Yuliya Lonskaya has once again clearly demonstrated her compositional ability with her song "Full of Dreams". That’s what makes Gypsy meets Classic so special and unique. This CD also features pieces by other artist colleagues, such as "El Abrazo" by their mutual friend Quique Sinesi.
Or "The Letter" by Alexander Razmakhnin. The duo has just "conquered" Great Britain with a three-week tour and thrilled the audience.

Yuliya Lonskaya is a prizewinner of several European guitar competitions and the first female guitarist from Belarus to perform at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall of the demanding Moscow Philharmonic. Her repertoire includes interpretations of works from the Baroque and Romantic periods to modern music influenced by folk and ethnic sounds.
Lulo Reinhardt is considered one of the most important, authentic, and distinctive musical voices in Gypsy music today. Critics and fans agree that it is not only because Lulo is the great-nephew of the world-famous Django Reinhardt. His unique musical genius and ability create an impression of complete effortless ease. Together they play a program featuring styles from Flamenco, Latin, Brazilian jazz, and Gypsy music.
