Whirling parties, champagne-perfumed melodies, and witty dialogues: Finally, the queen of operetta returns to the stage of the Theater Trier. Young, fast-paced, and profound as ever. The dance on the volcano in crisis-ridden Vienna evokes the wild 1920s with its escape from reality. Artistic director Lajos Wenzel will relocate the famous work in his inaugural production there. The overflowing energy of the operetta is condensed into a ball night at the abyss that stirs Viennese blood.
Head over heels, Gabriel von Eisenstein plunges into the legendary party at the wealthy Prince Orlofsky's. He has no idea that he is the victim of a gigantic revenge orchestrated by his friend Dr. Falke. The trigger was originally a simple carnival joke. But the situation completely spirals out of control. Falke moves heaven and earth, sparing no effort or cost, and everyone joins in. When the spectacle ends in disaster, the bitter realization sets in: everyone is guilty! Luckily, the blame can be placed on alcohol...
Johann Strauss Jr. has composed lilting babble in three-quarter time and written a masterpiece full of captivating ballets, situational comedy, and misunderstandings. Lies, improprieties, and the play of genders and roles have always captivated audiences. Few musical theater works hold a mirror up to society as indiscreetly and humorously as this one.
"In happy oblivion, he who forgets, what cannot be changed," as tenor Alfred famously philosophizes in this masterpiece - we, on the other hand, have been fortunate to be happy for 150 years, because Die Fledermaus is so unforgettable.
Music theater can hardly sound more amusing, biting, original, and profound! A great evening of entertainment.
