The Gleimhaus in Halberstadt is one of the oldest literature museums in Germany and offers a unique insight into the Enlightenment era. Established in the former residence of the poet and collector Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719–1803), it houses an impressive collection of portraits, books, and letters from the 18th century.
The heart of the museum is the so-called "Friendship Temple," a room whose walls are densely covered with portraits of Gleim's contemporaries. This collection is considered the largest portrait painting collection of writers and thinkers of the 18th century and offers a fascinating insight into the friendship culture of that time.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Gleimhaus regularly offers special exhibitions and events that deal with various aspects of the Enlightenment and literary history. A historical library and a reading room are also available for visitors.
The museum is accessible for people with disabilities and is centrally located at Domplatz in Halberstadt, ensuring good connections to public transport. Public parking is available in the vicinity, making it easy for guests to arrive.
Whether for culture enthusiasts, literature lovers, or history buffs – the Gleimhaus offers an inspiring setting for events and discoveries in a historical atmosphere.
