Musical comedy by Stephen Temperley
Translated by Lida Winiewicz
Florence Foster Jenkins passionately sang the classics of opera literature in the 1940s before a torn New York audience, not only with great enthusiasm but also completely and pitifully wrong! She was a phenomenon and still enjoys cult status today.
What began with singing lessons from the young pianist Cosme McMoon ultimately ended in a sold-out and hysterically roaring Carnegie Hall.
"Souvenir" is a comedy with music about Florence Foster Jenkins, the queen of false notes. Stephen Temperley depicts in his Broadway hit a woman imbued with art, whose rock-solid belief in her own musical talent is as comical as it is admirable.
Or to quote Florence Foster Jenkins: "People may say that I can't sing. But no one can say that I didn't sing."
