THE HOOTERS
When THE HOOTERS first appeared in the music scene of Philadelphia in 1980, they quickly conquered the East Coast. Led by keyboardist Rob Hyman and guitar-playing singer Eric Bazilian, they released their first indie album in 1983, which sold 100,000 records right away and featured original versions of future worldwide hits like "All You Zombies" and "Fightin On The Same Side".
Just 1 year later, THE HOOTERS signed their first major record deal with Columbia Records and shortly after, in 1985, released their official debut "Nervous Night" with classics such as "Day by Day", "And We Danced", "Where Do The Children Go", and of course "All You Zombies".
Fate or destiny led THE HOOTERS to participate in the LIVE AID concert in July 1985 in Philadelphia, quickly earning the band gold and platinum status worldwide for "Nervous Night". Following this, they were praised by the then most important music magazine, Rolling Stone, as the "Best New Band Of The Year" in 1985.
Fueled by their tremendous success, THE HOOTERS continued to deliver more hits to both fans and their record company. "Johnny B", "Karla With A K", and "Satellite" were all part of the album "One Way Home" (Columbia 1987), followed by the gold and platinum album "Zig Zag" (Columbia 1989), which caught the attention of none other than Pink Floyd's Roger Waters with the song "500 Miles". It was Roger Waters who invited THE HOOTERS to be a part of the legendary event of the 20th century and the end of the millennium, the multimedia event extravaganza "The Wall" (Live from Berlin) in 1990, alongside stars and greats like Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, The Band, Bryan Adams, and many others.
Not content with celebrating success after success with their band, Bandleaders Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman also ventured into writing hits for other artists. With producer Rick Cherloff, they created an all-time classic. We're talking about Rob and Cyndi Lauper's song "Time After Time", which was featured on Cyndi Lauper's debut album "She's So Unusual" and was nominated for multiple Grammys, including "Song Of The Year" and has always been one of the biggest hits of the 80s.
The debut album "Relish" by Joan Osborne was also co-written and played by Eric and Rob, and Eric's masterfully written hit "One of Us" stayed in the US Top 10 for over 8 weeks. "Relish" and partly the song "One of Us" were nominated for several Grammys in 1996 in the categories of "Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance".
Unsurprisingly, the list of artists who have worked with Rob and Eric reads like a "Who's Who" of the music world. Here is a, although not exhaustive, list: Taj Mahal, Mick Jagger, Sophie B. Hawkins, Jon Bon Jovi, Willie Nelson, The Band, LeAnn Rimes, Amanda Marshall, Billie Myers, Carole King, Robbie Williams, Dar Williams, Jonathan Brooke, JC Chasez, Meatloaf, and The Scorpions. In 2000, none other than Ricky Martin covered "Private Emotion", which became a huge hit.
In 2001, THE HOOTERS announced their reunion and have been touring intensively ever since. In 2023, their new album "More Rocking, More Swing" was released, featuring 8 new tracks plus a bonus live track, taking us back to the band's roots in the early 80s. With their unique blend of ska, reggae, and rock, recorded at the Keswick Theatre in November 2022, they offer their fans a real treat, especially with the inclusion of some early songs that they performed live in the beginnings.
