The Tingvall Trio is celebrating its twentieth band anniversary in 2023. Particularly noteworthy is that the trio has operated with the same lineup since its founding, up to this ninth album, BIRDS. Alongside pianist and namesake Martin Tingvall at the piano, this includes Omar Rodriguez Calvo on double bass and Jürgen Spiegel, who is responsible for drums and percussion.
The three Hamburg-based musicians have succeeded in writing a success story over these many years that is unparalleled: multiple ECHO JAZZ awards as Ensemble and Live Act of the Year, a total of six JAZZ Awards in Gold, two Impala Awards for international sales, a whole series of No.1 Jazz Chart albums, and four high placements in the German Top 100 Album Charts – which can certainly be considered outstanding in German jazz. With BIRDS, this development now reaches its preliminary peak. Martin Tingvall explains the title: "The album BIRDS is dedicated to the birds. They are the musicians of nature. They surround us daily with their music and can be incredibly inspiring. You just have to listen closely. Unfortunately, we often seem to stop doing that; too many other noises surround us, and we get distracted. I hope this album can inspire us to perceive the environment around us differently. I can already observe changes in the behavior of the birds, which are caused by global warming. SOS, it’s high time to pause, listen to nature, and take action.”
As always, Martin Tingvall is responsible for all compositions, but the pieces were developed by the trio together in rehearsals and concerts to hit recording readiness in arrangement and performance. And, of course, the album features tracks with catchy melodies, such as Woodpecker, Hummingbird, or Air Guitar. Wonderful ballads like The Day After, featuring a bowed double bass by Omar Rodriguez Calvo, alternate with pieces like Africa, which immediately embeds itself in your ears with its lightness. SOS, the call for help, offers a virtuosic Tingvall Trio sound and a touching composition, giving our earth a survival perspective. In his solo piece Call For Peace, Martin Tingvall contributes a particularly introspective moment to conclude.
The trio will present many of the new pieces on an extensive European tour in 2023/24, which kicks off in June with two major festival performances at the ELBJAZZ Festival in Hamburg and at Nils Landgren’s JAZZ BALTICA in Timmendorf.
