Odin - Wotan - Hildebrand Old High German and Old Nordic Songs
After the four water spirits lured us into the mythical realms of ancient Scandinavia with the third part of their legendary "Edda" song cycle, they have now traveled even further back in time and southwards towards our own cultural cradle to clothe the oldest preserved German poetry in the well-known Strömkarlen atmosphere with suitable musical attire.
Over the years, various composers of different genres have devoted themselves to setting to music the well-known Merseburg Incantations or the unfortunately incomplete Hildebrand Song. However, those familiar with the group's music can rightfully expect to experience the enchantment of the language artistry of our ancestors from over 1000 years ago up close. Sometimes ruggedly raw, sometimes yearningly sensual, the violin, guitar, keyed fiddle, double bass, and hurdy-gurdy blend into a sound that oscillates between archaic grace and modern finesse. Additional instruments such as the Norwegian "bukkehorn" and the oriental zither "quann" occasionally resonate, while the warmth and magic of the up to four-part vocals remain.
The delineation, selection, and handling of texts still rooted in Germanic paganism, which unfortunately are less well-preserved in Germany than in England or Scandinavia, required extensive preparation and research. Just as with Old Icelandic, the serious artistic treatment of the ancient language demands a reasonably scientifically based engagement with spelling, pronunciation, emphasis, and meter, but also with the cultural-historical context of the content and its imagery.
The initial results of this musical "further journey" approximately into Carolingian Germany will now sound for the first time before an audience, while the already familiar Edda songs continue to constitute the majority of the program, hopefully making the relationship, as well as the differences in the expression of both languages and epochs, entertainingly palpable.
