The Rotary Club Speyer has succeeded in winning the exceptional talent Justus Friedrich Eichhorn on piano, and the top ensemble of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under the direction of Elisabeth Sora Lee, for the gala concert on January 25, 2025, at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche. The program includes Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15 by Ludwig van Beethoven as well as Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites 1 (op. 46) and 2 (op. 55).
Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz
In the shadow of the First World War, engaged citizens met in Landau in September 1919 to decide on the founding of a traveling state symphony orchestra. After the founding concert on February 15, 1920, the orchestra set out on its first concert tour through the Palatinate and Saarland. This marked the beginning of the history of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, which can now look back on a long tradition.
Even in the first years, the orchestra attracted regional attention under the baton of Richard Strauss and Hermann Abendroth. Chief conductors like Christoph Eschenbach and Leif Segerstam, today's honorary conductor, helped the ensemble gain international recognition. Michael Francis, who has been chief conductor of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz since the 2019/20 season, also provides numerous new impulses to continue the orchestra's tradition.
As an orchestra without a permanent home, the symphonic provision of the federal state remains the most important task of the Staatsphilharmonie to this day. With more than 150 events at about 30 venues in Germany and abroad, it brings music to the people. Educational and family formats enrich the offerings for young people. Children are already introduced to the world of classical music through rehearsal visits and concerts for toddlers. Regular concert recordings by SWR and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, as well as numerous CD productions, round out the diverse spectrum of activities of the Staatsphilharmonie.

Concert proceeds for Hermann-Marx-Kenia-Hilfe e.V.
The concert proceeds and donations this year benefit children in Kenya whose parents cannot afford school fees. The Hermann-Marx-Kenia-Hilfe e.V. based in Rhodt operates in Mombasa, Maungu, and Bura. The three schools built by the organization are run by the St. Joseph Sisters (320 active sisters without succession worries).
Currently, the "Mother Theresa Primary and Junior School" in Bura has only 120 students, and the boarding school "St. Joseph Girls Secondary School" in Maungu has 140 students, which results in financial problems.
Because not all parents can always pay the school fees, there is a deficit in ongoing operations. Financial support from the Hermann-Marx-Kenia-Hilfe is thus repeatedly necessary – especially when families in these rural regions are in need.
The association has now established the aid fund "School Sponsorships" for both schools so that children from poor families can also participate in classes. In addition, efforts are being made to increase the number of students to raise revenues – as successfully practiced in Mombasa. There, the "St. Joseph Hermann Marx School" recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with 830 students.
