What was happening in Bavaria around 1800? The song evening of Ensemble Almanach dares to look behind the scenes: With works by forgotten Bavarian composers, as well as unique sources about the lives of people.
A song by the composer Robert Schumann talks about the Alps and Alpine dairymaids - but how were the real dairymaids doing at that time? Or another example: Playing and listening to German dances by Schubert, Mozart, or Haydn takes on a different meaning when you have previously heard the following note from a contemporary, the Bavarian General Land Director Joseph Hazzi: "Among the joys of life, the Rotthal girl counts the German dance above all, which here so completely expresses the passion, as under many improper positions, often so tumultuous and raging that the youth's mouth foams." The connection of music and text changes perspectives, brings us the unknown, shows the known in a new light.
To give a genuine, informative insight into the time around 1800, the program Beauty and State Failure also leaves the peaks of Schubert, Mozart, or Haydn, and sets out in search of composers and composers who are now forgotten: Josephine Lang or Joseph Peter von Lindpaintner were stars in their time. They are part of the sound of their world. And for us today, they offer great new discoveries, unexpected and compelling in the familiar sound language of Classical and Romantic music. And what the General Land Director Joseph Hazzi has to report about the Duchy of Bavaria around 1800 is exemplary, hair-raising, and often quite funny.
The young Munich ensemble Almanach explores the cosmos of art songs in a new way - the text-bearing accompaniment transforms into an intense, colorful stage set. A classical repertoire meets a lineup rooted in the sound world of folk music: clarinet, dulcimer, accordion, and double bass accompany the voice. The quintet, founded in winter 2019, thus provides the typical, familiar sound, but at the same time opens up surprising, overwhelming spaces.
