She is the most delicate among the three groundbreaking operas of Giuseppe Verdi. La Traviata is once again to be experienced in Trier with its story of colorful life and tragic death. In the triad with Rigoletto and Troubadour, Verdi elevated himself with this masterpiece over the Italian opera compositions of his contemporaries and thereafter dominated the Italian music theater until the end of the 19th century.
Violetta Valéry is an attractive and popular woman of the vibrant Parisian society. She plunges into a life full of luxury to forget her life-threatening tuberculosis. Overwhelmed by Alfredo Germont's unusually honest affection, Violetta enters into a serious relationship with him. During a personal meeting, Alfredo's father is impressed by Violetta's dedication and sincerity but demands the separation of the two – the family's reputation must be preserved. Knowing of her impending death, Violetta reluctantly agrees to the seemingly reasonable solution and returns to her old life. Alfredo, oblivious and blinded by jealousy, humiliates her in front of society due to the misunderstanding. Clarification, remorse, and repentance come too late.
