An education project with the Heinrich-von-Kleist-Schule Eschborn and the Freie Waldorfschule Frankfurt

“People can be our home, as they say. But what if a city gives you a home? When both the negative and positive sides give you a sense of home. Yes, at the main train station, one feels uncomfortable. Groups of people surround you, with whom you normally have nothing to do. You feel watched, ignored, vulnerable. What if I end up there? You want to achieve everything in life, but the last thing you want is to end up there too. You can literally see their lives disappearing. But then you're by the river Main in the evening, and it seems as if every door is open. The lights look so beautiful, even if they only illuminate some offices somewhere.”

Social inequality, drugs, weapons, and (missing) nature in the big city are just a few topics that young people connect with the theme “My City in Texts – Images - Sound.” For over six months, the students of the Heinrich-von-Kleist-Schule Eschborn and the Freie Waldorfschule Frankfurt have creatively dealt with their joys and grievances about “their city” and searched for texts, images, and compositions. Together with musicians Uwe Dierksen (Ensemble Modern) and Bertold Breig, filmmaker Pola Sell, author Antigone Akgün, and theater makers Matthias Faltz and Julius Ohlemann, they improvised, collected, texted, and rehearsed. The student band - supported by musicians from Bridges-Musik verbindet - and the choir of the Freie Waldorfschule will bring the sound of the city to the public stage, while the texts of the youth about their observations, problems, and wishes will come alive in scenes on stage against a cinematic backdrop and in film sequences, creating a collage of real and fictional city observations that brings their insecurities and hopes for a livable future to the theater stage.

The artist Heinz Battke (1900 – 1966) initially attended the private Berlin art school “A. Propp” from 1918 to 1921, after which he was a student of Karl Hofer at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin (1922 – 1925). During the Nazi era, Battke was one of the so-called "degenerate" artists. He emigrated to Italy in 1935 and lived in Florence. In 1956, he returned to Germany and took on the position as head of the class for Free Graphic Arts at the “State Academy of Fine Arts – Städelschule” in Frankfurt am Main.

After World War II, Battke was represented at significant national and international art exhibitions: in 1951 he participated in the First Biennale in São Paulo, in 1954 works by Battke were exhibited in the German Pavilion at the Biennale in Venice, and in 1959 at documenta 2 in Kassel. He exhibited several times at the “Frankfurt Art Cabinet Hanna Bekker vom Rath” founded in 1947. Works by Battke were also part of the private art collection of the Hofheim painter, patron, collector, and gallery owner Hanna Bekker vom Rath.

Several works by Battke are part of the art collection of the Hofheim City Museum, with the collection consisting of around 45 drawings and graphics never having been fully shown in an exhibition. Landscapes, (self-) portraits, and still lifes define the overall work. The exhibition presents the work of the painter, draftsman, and graphic artist in a focused manner. Battke was also a recognized jewelry expert for rings and built up a large collection of rings, which is now owned by the Jewelry Museum in Pforzheim. Battke's private collector activities are also presented in the exhibition.

In addition to works by Heinz Battke, the exhibition features works by Hanna Bekker vom Rath, Rudolf Levy, Hans Purrmann, Emy Roeder, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Woyzeck is the man that everyone tramples on...

Therefore, he is a victim, not a perpetrator. What would Woyzeck be today? A young man in precarious circumstances, without a chance for social advancement. He scrapes by with odd jobs, ruins his health out of financial desperation in questionable medical experiments, passes the time with Andres, and must come to terms with the fact that the only thing that gives his life stability - his relationship with Marie - falls apart, slips away from him. This inevitably leads to a catastrophe. But the world around him also falls apart, the Captain and the Doctor are well aware that they too can lose their social status at any moment, just cogs in the wheel of a society that has become inhumane.

The fragmentary nature of the play is deliberately maintained, situations flash by, spotlights like video clips, bright, fast, and even comically exaggerated.

Species protection requires protected habitats! This exhibition is one of them! Various artists offer a creatively individual perspective on this important topic. An exhibition that attempts to counteract the actions of the so-called "civilized" humanity. It aims to set signs with the very own statements of the creators and is happy to ask more questions than to provide answers. It invites not only young and old to reflect and act, but also to discover, wonder, and chuckle.

In the main rooms, we show works by Simon Czapla, Matthias Garff, Alexandra Lukaschewitz, Corjan Nodelijk, Irmela Maier, Stephanie Marie Roos, Markus Willeke, Gaby Wormann, and Yongbo Zhao.

In the cabinet, we present works by artists of the gallery who work on the subject. Included are: Jim Avignon, Elvira Bach, Stephan Balkenhol, Piot Brehmer, Kristina Fiand, Raimund Göbner, Olaf Hajek, Johannes Hüppi, Robert Indiana, Suscha Korte, Markus Lüpertz, Nikki Pelaez, Mel Ramos, Marina Sailer, Salustiano, Slava Seidel, Gan-Erdene Tsend, Raymond E. Mr. Mushnik's flower shop in the run-down backstreet of a big city has no customers, but wilted flowers, one leads to the other. Seymour, his clumsy employee, is busy breeding mysterious plants and secretly in love with his colleague Audrey. When Mushnik decides to close his shop, salvation comes in the form of a strange plant that Seymour found under mysterious circumstances and lovingly named Audrey II in honor of Audrey. As soon as this plant is displayed in the window, it attracts the interest of curious customers. The store thrives, but everything comes at a price: The plant, which grows faster than any mushroom colony, develops a very specific appetite – for human flesh. When the always-hungry plant finally reaches out its roots towards Seymour and Audrey, it's time to take action…

Based on Roger Corman's low-budget film comedy from 1960, Menken and Ashman's Horror-Comedy-Rock-Musical debuted on July 27, 1982 as an Off-Off-Broadway show and immediately caused a sensation. Shortly after its premiere, the musical made its way to German-speaking stages as "Der kleine Horrorladen" and has since experienced numerous new productions in America and internationally, ranging from enthusiastic amateur theaters to Broadway shows. The original 1982 production received, among other awards, the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Musical, and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

With 13 I got high, with 15 party drugs, with 17 benzos, then opiates. A "typical" drug career? The production "High" deals with consumption, abuse, and the societal approach to medications, especially pain relievers and sedatives among young people.

"Was there a moment where you thought, shit, I'm addicted...?"
"Well, that thought didn't really occur to me until the end... it was a big mix of everything, it was both intensifying feelings and controlling feelings. It was pushing feelings away, it was also safety, it was a tool, it was everything."

With this personal piece, which develops from experience and is artistically explored on stage, mother and son want to open a dialogue with young people: about the mechanisms of intoxication and addiction.

The evening will be hosted by the master of ceremonies, Bernhard Westenberger, who is currently touring with his fourth solo program "Gestern ging`s noch". He has invited four acts that couldn't be more different. Vera Deckers, the funniest psychologist in Germany, meets El Mago Masin, a unique figure in the German-speaking cabaret scene. A man, a guitar, and many quirky thoughts. The Duo Diagonal combines skill with wacky comedy – with few words and full physical involvement, and Roger Stein, the piano cabaret artist, is no stranger to the ShowSpielhaus, having already been a guest twice in a sold-out house with his solo shows.

Comedian and comedian Michl Müller dances the "Limbo of Life"

As the Roman politician, writer, and philosopher Cicero once said, "No sober person will think of dancing unless he is crazy." More than 2000 years later, this statement is now being refuted for the first time. By Michl Müller, cabaret artist, comedian, Franconian, and carnival philosopher. In 2024, his new stage program "Limbo of Life" will premiere. In it, the multi-award-winning artist and musician proves that life as a whole is a dance that can surprisingly be mastered soberly and without major fits of madness.

Sometimes mischievously funny, sometimes thigh-slappingly loud, direct and crude, then again with softer and more thoughtful tones, Michl Müller skillfully and humorously moves through the highs and lows of everyday life. Proper posture and skill are required for Limbo dancing. The bar is horizontal, the back is bent backwards, knees and shoulders must not touch the ground. Anyone who wants to pass under the bar without touching it needs talent and flexibility. This is especially true for the "Limbo of Life."

And as such, “Germany's favorite Frenchman” (FAZ) dissects the general news situation in his stage program with razor-sharp insight, comments on the major scandals of our time, and dedicates himself with his characteristic journalistic meticulousness to the small but all the more notable finds from the everyday madness of Germany. Above all, ALFONS presents in “Le BEST OF” a selection of personal highlights: the best from his long-term studies on the behavior of Germans in the wild - the best texts, the best stories, and of course some of his infamous reports from this land of poets and plumbers, small gardeners and backwoodsmen.

What drives him time and again? It is the quest for the true essence of the Germans - an everlasting mystery: “Back when I left France, I told my friends: ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon - I’ll just stay as long as it takes to understand the Germans.’ That was over 25 years ago. Alors, I’m still here…”

You simply need to get a ticket for your favorite venue and we will serve you with multiple artists. In the Comedy Night, it's actually the comedians who move between the venues. Down from one stage, up to the next. This is a truly comedic marathon for both the artists and the audience.

Whether it's a restaurant, a student pub, a cultural center, a hair salon, a cinema, or a cocktail bar - the venues of the Comedy Night are as diverse as the comedians who perform here. What remains the same everywhere is the fun factor. Laughter is at the forefront of the Comedy Night. And because laughing alone is possible but can sometimes seem peculiar, it's best to go to a Comedy Night with friends, colleagues, or - depending on the level of your humor - even the in-laws. Together, you can laugh, eat and drink deliciously, and have enough time during the breaks between performances to have a relaxed conversation.

By the way, the first Comedy Night took place in the Oldenburg city center in 2008. This unique comedy marathon now regularly takes place in over 40 German cities (including Bielefeld, Frankfurt, Hannover, Kassel, Lübeck, Münster, and Oldenburg).

Admit it, you just read "Power to the People" and internally hummed the wonderful song by John Lennon. But this title is not a typo because Philipp Weber's cabaret piece is all about the little "Popel," which according to the Duden refers to an "insignificant and miserable little person." Actually, it is the task of democracy to transform the scattered tiny beings into a self-governing people, the sovereign sovereign. But how quickly can the Popel also become the Pöbel? According to unofficial surveys by the federal government, 75 percent of Germans believe that three-quarters of Germans are complete idiots. But who really has the say here? The People, the Pöbel, or the Popel?

The answer is simple: Philipp Weber! In times when representatives of the people and deceivers of the people endlessly invoke the crisis of bourgeois society, the cabaret artist practices the most valuable democratic virtue with his audience on an exciting expedition through the flora and fauna of the state: humor. Laugh along and protect democracy!

Species protection requires protected habitats! This exhibition is one of them! Various artists offer a creatively individual perspective on this important topic. An exhibition that attempts to counteract the actions of the so-called "civilized" humanity. It aims to set signs with the very own statements of the creators and is happy to ask more questions than to provide answers. It invites not only young and old to reflect and act, but also to discover, wonder, and chuckle.

In the main rooms, we show works by Simon Czapla, Matthias Garff, Alexandra Lukaschewitz, Corjan Nodelijk, Irmela Maier, Stephanie Marie Roos, Markus Willeke, Gaby Wormann, and Yongbo Zhao.

In the cabinet, we present works by artists of the gallery who work on the subject.
