A century – portrayed as compellingly and intensely as a classic tragedy:
With the birth of Stasia, daughter of a Georgian chocolate manufacturer, in 1900 in Georgia, the first of the eight lives begins, along with the family chronicle of the Jaschis, which unfolds over an entire century, six generations, and the political upheavals of Georgia and the Soviet Union, extending into Germany in the year 2007.
Niza, great-granddaughter of Stasia, records the family history for her niece Brilka: of Stasia, who would have loved to become a dancer in Paris but leads her withdrawn Georgian life like a living anachronism until the end; of her beautiful sister Christine, who must pay for her encounter with the highest political power throughout her life; of Stasia's children, Kostja, who is a Soviet apparatchik body and soul yet never finds happiness, and Kitty, who, physically and psychologically broken, must leave the country but builds a life and career in western exile; of Elene, Kostja's wild daughter, who rebels against the rigid system imposed upon her, and of Daria and Niza, Elene's daughters, who could not be more different yet are each other's only support.
In a grand, ecstatic arc, wherein all lives, events, and decisions made are inextricably intertwined with the political major events of their respective times, "Das achte Leben" tells of betrayal, pain, adaptation, resistance, revolution, war, violence, and power, but also of love, passion, hope, and brief moments of happiness.
Nino Haratischwili has - against the backdrop of the profound history of Georgia and the Soviet Union during the politically formative 20th century - created characters in her epic that deeply embed themselves in our souls with their constant tornness and fateful intensity, resonating long afterward. In the end, the realization forms that no life escapes its history: The influence of the past on the present is indelible.
