If a jazz trumpeter meets a classical string quartet, this is actually not intended in the music world. But overcoming boundaries is part of the program.
Joo Kraus
The Ulm jazz trumpeter Joo Kraus is coming to the summer stage for his 60th birthday together with the Sirius Quartet. The five musicians first met over ten years ago at a concert in Ulm. What followed was described by the press as "Sound of Stars from New York," an incredible evening that still resonates to this day.
For many years, Joo Kraus has rightly been counted among the most renowned jazz trumpeters in our latitudes. At the age of 19, he won the first prize at the national competition "Jugend musiziert." Afterwards, he gained five years of stage experience with the electro-rock band "Kraan." Together with Hellmut Hattler, Joo founded the hip-jazz duo "Tab Two" in the early 1990s. In the 2000s, he increasingly wrote his own songs. Joo Kraus encompasses many decades of international stage and studio experience, countless worldwide tours, 2 Grammy nominations, the Echo Jazz as the best German trumpeter, and 5 German Jazz Awards in gold.
But whether Joo performs with the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, with Paula Morelenbaum, as a guest of Klaus Doldinger, with the SWR Big Band, or the Jazz Choir Freiburg, there is always this unmistakable tone: humble yet powerful, infectious joy of playing combined with sensitive attentiveness to fellow musicians.
Half string quartet, half rock band, the Sirius Quartet is not a typical string quartet. All four string players are classically trained and at the same time excellent improvisers and composers. As the first string quartet, it mainly performs original compositions but does not shy away from free improvisations. Together with Joo Kraus, who also feels at home in many styles, this evening will be very exciting and present the audience with a new sound. The five musicians blend fresh repertoire with improvisational fire. Their progressive approach makes labels like "New Music" seem quaint. They expand the sonic spectrum of the classical string quartet both in the purely acoustic form and with electronic effects.
Sirius Quartet (New York)
Since its debut concert at the Knitting Factory in New York, Sirius has played in some of the world's most important concert halls, such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Beijing Music Festival, the Köln Music Triennale, Stuttgart Jazz Festival, Musique Actuelle in Canada, the Taichung Jazz Fest (Taiwan's most significant jazz festival), and many others.
With the world premiere of works by significant living composers, Sirius continues its long-standing commitment to musical innovation with bold, original works by its own members and goes beyond the conventional vocabulary of string instruments by incorporating popular song forms, extended techniques, compelling improvisations, and contemporary grooves.
A joint single and album will be released four weeks before the concert in Blaubeuren.
