A theater project at a historic location

The Stadt:Ensemble Ludwigsburg is starting a new performance project in and around the Central Office of the State Justice Administrations for the clarification of National Socialist crimes in Ludwigsburg in 2026. Under the working title "Das hier ist kein Rückblick", a station theater is being created that takes visitors on a guided path through the grounds and into the rooms of the Central Office.

The project combines historical research, artistic intervention, and contemporary societal issues. It asks:

How can we think about responsibility today?
What does justice mean in a democratic society?
And how do we prevent people from becoming perpetrators, victims, or mere bystanders?

A place with history – a place in motion

The Central Office in Ludwigsburg has been responsible for investigating National Socialist crimes nationwide since 1958. It stands for legal investigative work, document study, and historical responsibility. With the theater project, the location opens up in a new way: Not as a museum, not as an exhibition – but as a space of experience. In small visitor groups, the audience moves in and around the Central Office. Scenic interventions, choir passages, monologues, and movement make history, present, and future not only audible but also physically tangible.

Memory as a question of the present

The piece deliberately refrains from historical retelling. It is not about reconstruction, but about perspective shifts.

The performance poses uncomfortable questions:

Is turning a blind eye a decision?
Can silence have consequences?
Where does personal responsibility begin?

In the end, the audience is not just an audience – they must take a position themselves.

But what does it mean if your own grandfather appears in it? How does this knowledge change the view of one’s own family and its traditions? On this theme day, we approach the NS past in our own families: with introductory talks, discussion rounds, and practical workshops. Historians and psychologists accompany the sensitive handling of troubling findings. Together, we ask: How do we talk about guilt, silence, and responsibility - across generations and honestly?

ZweitZeuge - Opa war ein Nazi - Ein Theaterstück von und mit Ilka Vierkant (ab 13 Jahre)

How can a Holocaust survivor confront the granddaughter of a Nazi perpetrator? In “ZweitZeuge”, Jean Vaislic and Ilka Vierkant embark on the painful journey of this confrontation. Both live under the mandate of silence – for different reasons. The granddaughter embarks on the process of discovering the hidden stories at the heart of her own family.

Ilka's grandfather Werner was the railway director for the eastern territories. Auschwitz survivor Jean had to lay tracks in Auschwitz-Birkenau as a concentration camp inmate that this grandfather might have planned. The meeting with Jean in Toulouse becomes a catalyst for the actress, who toured Europe for many years with FAMILIE FLÖZ, to develop a poetic puppet theater evening against forgetting – inspired by the words of Jean Vaislic: “If I give in to a bad thought, I no longer exist. So when a bad thought comes over me, I think of flowers.”

A German-French and also Polish story between the generations.

ZweitZeuge – Opa war ein Nazi
