There he is. The state actor (!) Bruscon. With his comedy "The Wheel of History," which encompasses all of world literature. In Utzbach. The venue is the dance hall in the inn "Schwarzer Hirsch." A non-place. "I haven't even entered this kind of inn to piss," "a trap of art"!
Overall, the 280-inhabitant community is extremely unprepared for the upcoming world success. The ensemble consists of Bruscon's family, his supposedly cold-ridden wife, and the two talentless children. All disappointments. Gigantic anti-talentism!
In endless tirades, which ultimately express only his own insecurity, loneliness, and need for love, Bruscon inexorably approaches the start of the performance. Contrary to expectations, the hall fills up, the hope of being heard and worshipped makes its way.
"If we are honest, theater itself is an absurdity. If we are honest, we can't do anything anymore. Except to kill ourselves. And since we don't want to kill ourselves, at least not until today and until now, since we haven't killed ourselves until today and until now, we keep trying again and again with theater."
Thomas Bernhard's most famous play, a classic of the 20th century, is a comedic love letter to the theater. With his inimitable linguistic mastery, he manages to make the entire fascination that theater brings with all its contradictions and enchantments clearly visible. Première in 1985 at the Salzburg Festival, the play has lost none of its comedic and tragic power.
