Two performers, Franca Rosa von Sobbe and Julika Schlegel, tell and dance stories of self-becoming and reveal puberty as a queer life phase. In a world where resistance is both a necessity for survival and a potential catalyst for violence, this piece deconstructs the term to reveal its nuances. PHILIPP SCHOLTYSIK works as a dramaturg, performer, and director. He studied economics in Regensburg and Berlin and dramaturgy in Frankfurt. In 2014, he founded studioNAXOS in Frankfurt with colleagues, which has established itself as an important venue for contemporary positions in the performing arts and has since merged into the production house NAXOS. He has been involved in works that have been invited to festivals nationwide and internationally, including the Festival Premières in Karlsruhe, tjcc in Gennevilliers, and the Impulse Festival. He was also an artist-in-residence at Fleestreet Theater Hamburg. Since the 2023/24 season, he has been working as a dramaturg for the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company.

TARO.CAPA.X reflects upon the strength of images and honors the courage of everyone who, today as well as back then, bear witness to the horrors of war with their camera.

UND WAS DIE SEELE DIR VERSTÖRT, IST ES NOCH DA?

At the transition from the Middle Ages to modern times, hundreds of people danced excessively for weeks in the squares of Strasbourg. For many, the dance frenzy only ended with death. To this day, it remains unclear what exactly happened back then. An illness? Demonic possession? Mass hysteria? A counter-society? What about intoxication and ecstasy? Every interpretation of the dance frenzy reflects a worldview, pointing to constraints or utopias. The production originally premiered under the title Die Bakchen, which comes from an ancient drama in which Dionysus punishes cruelly all who refuse him worship through dance.

In a kind of immersive audio play, the performance makes the adventurous attempt to empathize with the medieval events. The audience can engage in this exercise either in imagination or with their own bodies. Sensing what happened back then simultaneously brings the present into focus. Suddenly, the Raving Society becomes a more plausible way of life than the desire to function in a society that is about to collapse anyway. Now the only question is whether the beat kicks in.

Anfang der 1990er-Jahre erlebte Sebastian Weber die New Yorker Stepptanz-Szene als einen Ort, der Rassismus hinter sich gelassen hatte. Die Schwarzen Meister des Jazz-Tap praktizierten Stepptanz als solidarische Gemeinschaft, in die sie junge Europäer*innen mit offenen Armen aufnahmen. „If you have a pair of tap shoes on, you are in!“, sagte Gregory Hines und sein Bruder Maurice sekundiert „Dancers don’t see color“ – und meinte das positiv. 30 Jahre später befasst sich Sebastian Weber, einer der wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Stepptänzer Deutschlands, mit den Utopien von damals und dem heutigen Verständnis von Rassismus. „The Long Run“ ist ein Stück über kulturelle Aneignung und Identität, über weiße Verantwortung und Rassismus. Es ist auch ein sehr persönlicher Tanz über Vergänglichkeit und Erinnerung und eine Befragung des Körpers als Speicher von Begegnungen und Geschichten.

In the early 1990s, Sebastian Weber experienced the New York tap dance scene as a place that had left racism behind. The Black masters of jazz tap practiced tap dance as a solidarity community, welcoming young Europeans with open arms. "If you have a pair of tap shoes on, you are in!" said Gregory Hines, and his brother Maurice added, "Dancers don’t see color" – and he meant it positively. 30 years later, Sebastian Weber, one of the most important contemporary tap dancers in Germany, deals with the utopias of that time and today's understanding of racism. "The Long Run" is a piece about cultural appropriation and identity, about white responsibility and racism. It is also a very personal dance about transience and memory and an inquiry into the body as a repository of encounters and stories.
