For his new show “Power and Passion," the celebrated American choreographer combines two of the things that particularly characterize his ensemble: strength and passion. None of the pieces have been seen before in Europe. Jon Lehrer’s athletic dance language connects the fluidity of modern dance with the energy of jazz dance to create an expressive dance experience. His choreographies feel simultaneously organic, artistically human, often playfully witty, and thus become a playful mirror of human experiences and states of being. “Power and Passion” includes three choreographies. It all began in 2007 with “A Ritual Dynamic”: The audience was immediately captivated by the bold jumps and athletic figures. This piece is often shown at the end of a performance – here it provides a spectacular start. Moving and thought-provoking follows with the new work “Foster,” which premiered only last year. John Lehrer dedicates it to his younger brother Michael Foster Lehrer, who passed away in 2023, and processes his grief through it. Accompanied by church choir music, the dancers portray Michael’s six-year battle against the nerve disease ALS, supporting each other on increasingly weaker legs, giving each other strength. The concluding piece “La Follia” offers regained, delicate glimmers of light, escalating to an increasingly wild, bordering on madness joy of life set to the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Jon Lehrer participated in a modern dance class for fun at the age of 19 – and found his calling.
