The route of the Saalbahn follows the Saale from Großheringen to Saalfeld, part of a trade route that was already important in the Middle Ages, the major trade road from southern Germany through the Thuringian Forest along the Saale to Naumburg (Saale) and Leipzig. On May 1, 1874, the complete Saalbahn was ceremoniously opened. The train starts in Saalfeld and travels to Großheringen. From there, it goes back to Naumburg and then returns to Saalfeld. Our special train departs from Potsdam / Berlin nonstop to the Baltic Sea and takes you directly to the island of Rügen in Binz. There, the Baltic Sea shows its finest side: The wonderfully wide sandy beach invites you to relax and the refreshing Baltic Sea water provides the necessary cooling off. But nothing stands in the way of exploring the island. Start from the pier in Binz and experience the breathtaking beauty of the famous chalk coast and the Königsstuhl, Rügen's famous landmark. But railway enthusiasts will also get their money's worth. The Rasende Roland, as it is affectionately called, has been running since 1895 at a cozy top speed of 30 km/h across the island of Rügen, connecting the famous seaside resorts.

The historic train from the former German Reichsbahn is pulled by a diesel locomotive of the series 232 and offers comfortable seating in 1st and 2nd class.
